A lot of attention has been paid to PA soccer forward Danny Scatena the leading scorer in Division II and deservedly so. But the week of October 11-October 17 the Patriots’ goalie Brian Werts has as big an impact as any player in the Patriots crucial 2-1 win over Berwick on October 13.
Two days later Brian held Wyoming Area to just one goal in a 7-1 win. Just 15 seconds into the second half he punted to midfield where Pietro Colella headed the ball to Scatena who scored.
Sliding, diving and leaping Brian stopped 13 shots, several in the final minutes as the desperate Bulldogs went on the attack.
He’s phenomenal,” said PA soccer coach Pat O’Boyle. “Every game this year he comes up with saves like that.”
Posters of Brian can be seen at Januzzi’s Pizza and Smart Designs and Graphics in Wyoming and Tony’s Pizza in Jenkins Township.
