Bohan’s big game was needed to offset the all-out hustle of PA senior Lisa Ostrander. She didn’t figure much in the statistics, but she was all over the floor, setting, hitting and digging and keeping the Lady Patriots emotionally charged. In the third set, from deep down the sideline she struck a ball over her head with her back to the net and into the floor in the middle of the WA defense for a kill.
In the first set PA trailed 5-0 and 7-3, but came back to tie it 8-8 on an ace by Ostrander.
As was a trend throughout the three sets won by the LWs, Bohan came up with a big hit every time Pittston Area threatened. In the first set the LPs led 11-10 and Bohan sizzled one into the corner to tie it. Later in that first set the LPs went up by three 17-14 after an ace by Paula Stravinski and a dig by libero Emily Ginocchetti, the LWs scored four to go head 18-17. Elena DeAngelo made a block, Kelly Klaproth served an ace and Bohan made a big hit for the 18th point.
Ostrander kept PA even with a kill, but another blast by Bohan put WA ahead to stay 19-18. They won 25-20.
In the second set after PA closed within two, 13-15, Bohan made three straight points. After a kill she was blocked by Brianna Dushock. The ball went back at Bohan’s head and she somehow slapped it back over and it fell just inside the net. Then DeAngelo set Bohan up for another kill and it was 18-13.
WA led the rest of the way and won 25-19, through PA did get as close as 18-21. Krista Paluski served the last three points and Klaproth made a kill for the winning point.
Playing with urgency in the third set, the LPs won 25-15. By keeping serve they kept Bohan from rotating to the front for most of the set. It was close early at 10-9 when the serve went to Amanda Gretz. She served she served five points, the last an ace to make it 15-9. The LWs got a point, but served into the net and the serve went to PA’s Krista Rowland who served all the way to 18-10.
In the fourth set Klaproth came up big in the front for WA when Bohan rotated to the back. Klaproth had four kills and a block in the fourth. WA went up 21-10. Gretz had two kills, Beth Yuschovitz three service points and Dushock another block, as PA mounted mild comeback to make the final 25-15.
For WA Eaton had 25 assists and 12 service points. Klaproth had seven kills, three blocks, and four digs.
F0r PA Ginocchetti had 12 digs, Yuschovitz had nine service points and Gretz had seven points and eight digs.
The Lady Warriors picked up a Bridge point for the school, making it 6-3 PA with one game left, football on November 6.
“I thought we played fantastic,” said WA coach Lisa Day, especially after what happened last year. In 2008 WA won the first two games only to lose the next three to PA. “The girls came out fired up, ”though they cooled down in the third set. “I can’t honestly point one thing out in that set. We just slowed down. Pittston has a good team this year we’re pretty even. We’ve been playing as a team. We had problems with that in the past.”
On Wednesday, Lake Lehman beat the LWs 3-1, despite another huge match by Bohan which included her 500th career kill. Bohan led the Warriors with nine blocks and 19 kills. Klaproth notched four kills and three blocks while Biz Eaton dished out 16 assists.
Bohan now has 504 kills, eight off the school record of 512 set by Joanna Smith in 2005. Bohan is considering playing volleyball at Wilkes University. Day played there, graduating in 2001.
PA (4-11) also lost on Wednesday to Crestwood 3-0. Paula Stravinski lead Pittston Area with eight service points and three assists. Emily Ginocchetti added eight digs, while Beth Yuschovitz had five service points and five digs.
