Heroes remembered

Memorial Day events to honor the men and women who served the country took place across the area this weekend.

On Saturday, May 23, services were held at the Lackawanna State Park.

On Monday, May 25, parades were held in Nicholson, Dalton, Factoryville and Clarks Summit. Also on Monday, memorial services hosted by the VFW Post 7069, Clarks Summit, were held at the following cemeteries: Abington Hills, Clarks Green and Hickory Grove, as well as at the group’s home post.

The Abington Civic League float in the Clarks Summit Memorial parade features a photo of Lance Corporal Dennis Veater who died in Iraq last year. Veater’s grandmother Betty Veater, mother Donna Veater and sister Karen Veater Walker are members of the group.

As is tradition, members of VFW Post 7069 and Clarks Summit Fire Company No. 1 Inc. gather around the grave of Jimmy McGowan to toast him after the Memorial Day service at Clarks Green Cemetery. Prior to his death in 1997, McGowan was an active part of both organizations.
