Teacher Appreciation Night at Sylvan Learning Center, as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. The students at the center in the Abington Shopping Center, 1148 Northern Blvd., Clarks Summit, were asked to invite their favorite teacher from their respective schools for an evening of recognition. There will be the opportunity to gain knowledge of how Sylvan programs complement the work of local schools, teachers.

May 7: 5th Annual Taste of the Valley, 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Genetti Manor, Main St., Dickson City. All proceeds will benefit The Geneva School, Olyphant. Glenburn Township Spring Cleanup, also on May 9. Residents are asked to place cleanup items curbside for pickup by 5 a.m. Friday, May 8. Items will be picked up Friday or Saturday at the discretion of the contractor. Metals must be kept separate from other items. Items that will not be picked up include: Regular household trash, recyclables, grass or leaves, non-compactable items such as brick, block and concrete, cast iron, auto parts, tires, batteries, motor oil or lubricants, paint (dried up paint cans are acceptable), paint thinners or turpentine, pesticides, hazardous, noxious, caustic, or acid chemicals, asbestos, metal drums, propane tanks, oil/gas containing items, explosives of any type including gun loading materials. Refrigerators/freezers/air conditioners must be certified Freon free with a tag containing the technicians ID number and dated.

Northeastern Pennsylvania Intergenerational Coalition 3rd Annual Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Conference, 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Best Western Genetti’s Hotel and Conference Center, Market St., Wilkes-Barre. Sylvan Learning Center hosts Relay for Life Fundraisers. All funds received for the following events will be donated to the American Cancer Society 2009 Relay for Life. Movie Night at Sylvan on Friday, May 8. Drop the kids (ages 5 to 12) off for a night of fun supervised by our certified teaching staff. Age appropriate movies in different rooms plus games and snacks. Cost: $5 per student. Twenty student limit, reservations required but accepted until noon Friday. Yard Sale on Sunday, May 10. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 303 Crestwood Avenue, Clarks Summit. Barbecue at Sylvan Learning on Saturday, May 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the center for some grilled treats.

May 16: Chinchilla UMC to hold Cake Walk, The United Methodist Church of Chinchilla invites you to eat cake and then walk off those calories at 7 p.m., during their cake walk event, 411 Layton Rd. and Church St. in Chinchilla. It’s like musical chairs, but no one is left standing. While lively music plays, people walk in a circle around numbered chairs. When the music stops, everyone sits in the chair nearest them. If the number on their chair corresponds to the number on one of the cakes, they win the cake. About 20 cakes of all types will be available. Coffee and cold drinks will also be served. Cost: Free.

Lackawanna Trail High School Relay for Life Team, "Rock for Relay" at the Lackawanna Trail High School from noon-4 p.m. Cost: Admission $7 with all proceeds going to American Cancer Society. Some of the bands participatingwill beCasimire Funk, Table for Two and more. Food and games available.

"Summer Spectacular" Camp Preview, at Gymboree in Clarks Summit, between 1 and 3 p.m. Music, specialty mini-camps for 3-5 year olds. Includes art and sports camps will be offered throughout the summer.
