The Old Forge Softball team will host its annual Night at the Races on Sunday, March 15 at Arco & Genell’s Restaurant Banquet Rom.
Doors open at 4:30 p.m. with the first race beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is $10 per person and includes food, soda and beer. A cash bar will be available for mixed drinks and wine.
Anyone interested in purchasing a horse or sponsoring a race is asked to call 562-2295.
Old Forge Borough tax bills for 2009 have been mailed and residents should expect them soon.
The rebate period which is shown on the statement is in effect from Feb. 15 until April 15. Payments can be made at the Old Forge Bank or my mail.
Any property owner who has not received a tax bill is asked to contact Borough Tax Collector Gary Propersi at the tax office at 457-6408 ext. 5.
The Old Forge Blue Devils Softball team is selling yard signs which support all Old Forge High School athletic teams. One side of the sign features the school’s Blue Devil Pride program logo with the other side adorned with the words Good Luck Blue Devils. Cost of the sign is $20 and all proceeds go to the Blue Devils softball team. Signs can be purchased through any Old Forge softball player.
The Old Forge Retired Citizens will meet March 4 at Arcaro & Genell’s. Plans for the March 22 St. Patrick’s Day Dinner will be discussed. For more info, call 457-3530 or 457-3159.
The Old Forge Borough Recreation Committee will hold its monthly meeting on March 4 at 7 p.m. in the Borough Building.
State Rep. Jim Wansacz has announced that the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship program is now open and accepting applications from prospective college students.

State Rep. Jim Wansacz will host his annual Youth and Government Forum from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 13 on the campus of Keystone College in La Plume. Wansacz said the annual forum is a way to engage students in learning about and participating in government.
Joining Wansacz as panelists will be state Sen. Bob Mellow, U.S. Rep. Chris Carney, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr., Lackawanna County Commissioner Corey O’Brien and Carbondale Mayor Justin Taylor. Mr. Kennedy, a wrestler from World Wrestling Entertainment, also will attend to discuss with students the importance of voting and becoming involved in the electoral process.
The forum’s four sessions will be held in Keystone College’s Miller Library, Wansacz said. Students from Abington Heights, Carbondale Area, Forest City Regional, Lackawanna Trail, Lakeland, North Pocono, Old Forge, Pittston Area, Riverside and Valley View high schools are participating.

The Old Forge School Board will hold its monthly meeting on March 18 at 7 p.m. in the district’s Large Group Instruction Room.
A chicken dinner will be sponsored by the National Honor Society in the Old Forge HS cafeteria on March 22 from 12 to 4 p.m. This will be a take out only dinner and includes Roasted Chicken, Potato, Vegetable, and a Dessert. Cost is $10 and tickets may be purchased from any honor society member or by the school at 457-6721 extension 117.
The Old Forge HS Class of 1989 will hold a reunion meeting on March 25 at 7 p.m. at Julia’s Hotel to plan its upcoming 20th reunion which will take place November 27.
Old Forge Borough Council is sponsoring a free tax clinic to be provided by representatives of Berkheimer Associates on March 26 from 3-4 p.m. at the borough building.
The St. Lawrence Church Social Club will sell Manhattan Clam Chowder on March 27 at a cost of $4 a quart. Quarts must be pre-ordered by calling 562-0746. Orders can be picked up between 11-1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. at the church hall.
The Old Forge Elementary PTA, in their ongoing effort to fund educational programs, activities and field trips for all students, will hold a Spring Festival on Saturday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church Hall.
The Craft Fair will feature local crafters, vendors and a Chinese Auction (drawing at 2 p.m.), local foods, instant bingo, and more. Admission is only $1.
