CARBONDALE – Carbondale will hold its sixth annual “Prayer: America’s Hope” in honor of National Prayer Day on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Pioneer City Train Station, behind Trinity Church on River Street.

Sponsored by the Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, the City of Carbondale and local ministries, the event is free and open to the public. Bring your own lawn chairs.

CHINCHILLA – The United Methodist Church, 411 Layton Road and Church Street, will host a Cake Walk on Saturday, May 16, at 7 p.m.

The Cake Walk is similar to musical chairs, but no one is left standing. People walk in a circle around numbered chairs while music plays. When the music stops, people sit in the nearest chairs. If the number on the chair corresponds to the number on one of the cakes, he or she wins the cake.

Coffee and cold drinks will also be served. The event is free and open to the public. Pastor is Tony Schwartz.

SCRANTON – The Covenant Presbyterian Church, Madison Avenue and Olive Street, Scranton, will host a lecture at 7 p.m. by Rudy Apel, president of the Chambon Foundation, New York City, who as a child spent time in two Nazi internment camps.

He will screen a short film and share his story of how he was saved. The program is co-sponsored by the Holocaust Education Resource Center of the Jewish Federation. Call 346-6400 for reservations

WAVERLY – The Waverly Community House, 1115 N. Abington Road, will hold its annual Waverly Waddle 5K Walk/Run, chaired by Michele Tierney, on Saturday.

The race will begin at 9. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on the back lawn of the building. Cost is $15 for adults and $8 for participants age 12 and under. Registration for a family of four costs $35 the day of the race or $30 in advance.

A Junior Waddle, for children age 8 and under, will take place immediately after the Waddle. There is no registration fee for the Junior Waddle and all participants will receive a ribbon.

Medals will be given in the following categories: first overall male and female runners, first overall male and female walkers, first and second runner in age groups 50-plus, 40-49, 30-39, 19-29, 13-18 and 12 and under.
