The Abington Community Library, Clarks Summit, marked Fire Prevention Week with a display of new fire safety and firefighter books for youngsters. The books were purchased with a grant given in memory of Dorothy Campbell by the Joseph W. Hall Memorial Auxiliary to the Clarks Summit Fire Company No. 1, Inc. Campbell was a member of the Auxiliary and a longtime teacher in the Abington Heights School District.
Each day, people set goals for ourselves—and may not even realize it: a goal to wake up at certain time in the morning, a goal to complete a certain project and even a goal to exercise more regularly throughout the week. In that same respect, children should learn at an early age how to set goals—and how to achieve them, according to Dana Edwards of the My Gym Center in Scranton.
It was similar to the popular television show American Idol, except with entrepreneurs instead of vocalists. During “Ben Franklin Venture Idol,” three early-stage company entrepreneurs seeking funding presented pitches to a panel of investors and the audience. Led by Venture Idol emcee Pennsylvania state treasurer Rob McCord, the investors asked questions, the audience voted and Apeliotus Vision Science was named the winning “Ben Franklin Venture Idol.” John Edwards, CEO of Apeliotus Vision Science accepted the prize of a $5,000 cash investment in his company. RantNetwork, Inc. and Chaperone Technologies, Inc. also competed and received cash investments.
The Anthracite Historical Discovery Center (AHDC) recently held “Museum without Walls” at St. Rose Academy in Mayfield. Leo Moskovitz, Jermyn, who recently celebrated his 104th birthday, presented stories of personal historical experiences of coal mining in the area.
