SCRANTON – On the day that it opened, the Gino Merli Veterans’ Center, 401 Penn Ave., Scranton, had one volunteer, Arlington Phillips, ready to help.
SCRANTON – Thirty-one years ago, Gabe Castagnaro said he was employed as a local beer truck driver when he received a call from a bowling buddy. His friend had joined St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, an organization dedicated to serving meals to the poor and needy in the area, as a cook. St. Francis was just beginning operations and Castagnaro said he was told that the truck used to collect food and clothing donations was broken down.
Lauren Opsasnick, 17, of Scranton and a Scranton Preparatory School senior, says people with special needs are not that different.
SCRANTON – At age 59, Emma Russo didn’t think she’d have already retired, more so the New York native didn’t think she’d be living in Scranton.
SCRANTON – Rose Bitto said that she and her husband Steve are practicing Catholics. They’ve been to many different churches over the years hearing about how people should help their peers, and after joining the Salvation Army’s church four years ago, Rose said she was inspired to volunteer.
