Holly Lansberry threw a one-hitter and scored the game’s only run Friday afternoon to lead Curwensville to a 1-0 victory over Old Forge in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class A softball state final at Shippensburg University.
Lansberry led off the fourth with a single, took second on a sacrifice and scored on an outfield error.
When Lansberry singled, she broke a streak of 54 straight batters retired by Old Forge pitcher Jess Armillay. The streak included 31 strikeouts and back-to-back perfect games in state quarterfinals and semifinals.
Nicole Giacometti bunted for a sixth-inning single for the only Old Forge hit for the second straight game.
Lansberry threw a one-hitter for her 21st shutout of the season while walking two and striking out five.
Armillay struck out six and did not walk a batter while throwing a three-hitter.
Curwensville’s Sara Clark doubled to start the bottom of the fifth inning for the game’s only extra-base hit, but was started at third.
The state title was the second in three years for Curwensville.
Old Forge was trying to add to the state titles won the boys’ basketball team in 1932 and the baseball team in 1992.
