1 days 4 hours ago | | | Email

Recently, the Luzerne County manager stated that he was considering termination of the existing inter-governmental partnership between the county and the Luzerne County Flood Protection Authority. In a prior commentary in The Times Leader, I provided a summary of the history of the Wyoming Valley Flood Protection System and the reasoning behind the development of this cooperation agreement. Letter to the Editor: Unless changes made now, US headed toward ‘class warfare’

I read the letter to the editor by Stanley Halas (“Parties fail to serve people,” Aug. 21). He is absolutely correct on issues he raises; others should be so aware. What is happening in this country right now is obscene. Our children and grandchildren are going to grow up in a country unrecognizable to us. The masses better wake up and get an understanding of what is happening before it’s too late.

Caught on Camera

Nick Wagner set out one evening earlier this month to put up his trail camera, but luckily, he also had his handheld camera. Wagner encountered this fisher and was able to snap a shot as the furbearer gave him a stare.Wagner saw the fisher in Huntington Township. No word yet on if it showed up on the trail camera later.Capture anything interesting on your hand-held or trail camera? A nice buck, bear, coyote or any other wildlife? We’d love to see it. Each week,...

Lessons from extinction

Doug Gross’ words stuck with me.I had just finished interviewing Gross, who is the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s director of the Endangered and Nongame Birds Section, about the passenger pigeon and the significance of the 100th anniversary of the day it went extinct.Gross talked about how man was able to obliterate the most abundant bird on the North American continent in less than 40 years during the mid to late 1800’s. While wiping out a passenger pi...

Hunters set for start of dove, goose season

It’s the equivalent of the first day of trout season, somewhat.Just as anglers spend the long winter waiting for spring to arrive — something they usually mark by the first day of trout season, hunters spend the summer waiting for the fall seasons to approach, and it all kicks off this Monday with the opening of the dove and resident goose seasons. When it comes to the former, they may be a bit hard to find in the Northeast Region. Bill Williams, the Pennsylva...

Letter to the Editor: Seven Tubs trail hikers say thanks to people who got them safely out of woods

On July 24, we stopped in Wilkes Barre overnight on our way to visit my brother. We read that the Seven Tubs Nature Area was beautiful, and the next morning we decided to take what we thought was a 2-mile hike.We must have taken the wrong trail. After more than two hours of hiking, my legs became harder to move. My wife called 911 for help, and they coordinated with a young man and woman to get my wife and me to the railroad tracks to be picked up by the EMT responders. We were dri...
