Mele’s Musings: Bobsledding in a bathtub

I have never engaged in a sport or activity that required the use of a helmet. So it was an unnatural feeling to have this gray sphere snugly nested around my noggin as Pedro and I prepared to hurtle ourselves on the bobsled run at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, New York. Thanks to the New York Olympic Regional Development Authority, which runs the venues from the 1932 and 1980 winter Olympics, the public can enjoy the “Bobsled Experience,” an abbreviated...

Letter to the Editor: Ensure pre-kindergarten programs among state’s top priorities, say United Way chiefs

The path to educational success for Pennsylvania’s children begins even before the doors open on the first day of kindergarten. That is why the United Way has been advocating for early learning through our Success by Six initiative. Our Opinion: An obituary for February 2015 records cold, hard truths about a nasty month

February 2015 died yesterday after a brief life, noteworthy for one near record-breaking achievement and what seemed like endless brutality.Meteorologists say it was one of the coldest Februaries to ever inhabit Northeastern Pennsylvania.Like the passings of despots and dictators, its demise, after only 28 days, was generally marked among Keystone State residents and their parka-wearing compatriots with relief if not outright glee. No memorial service is planned....

My family has been going there since the 1950s.My mother, Madeline Pifer, started going to the Half Circle around 1957, after MYF mee...

Letter to the Editor: Luzerne County detectives too highly paid to spend time shepherding prisoners

Luzerne County detectives are highly trained law enforcement officers and receive lucrative salaries as public servants. One would think that escorting prisoners from the prison to the courthouse should be the job of the sheriff’s department. How many times have the same highly trained detectives, seen escorting Hugo Selenski and Paul Weakley, been on the front page of Times Leader? That is a high price to pay for escort service.George J. Kochis...

Letter to the Editor: Columnist Steve Corbett reminded about duty ‘to speak the truth’

Some comments on Steve Corbett’s column (“Priest apologizes for showing anti-abortion video”) of Feb. 6:First, Mr. Corbett’s piece belonged, not on the front page, but on the Opinion page, for it was highly opinionated. Indicative of his catty tone was his use of quotation marks when referring to the CCD instructor as the “teacher.” Every student of English knows that this punctuation denotes that the word in quotations is not used in its ordinar...
