Our Opinion: Don’t be so quick to pack away ‘holiday spirit’

The question shouldn’t be whether you’re “in” the holiday spirit, or whether you managed before Christmas Day to “find” it – as if it were tucked away in the attic since last year, buried below boxes of plastic garland.Rather, the question for people who consider Dec. 25 sacred should be this: Have you embraced the holiday spirit?

Letter to the Editor: Salvation Army bell ringer finds experience spirit-raising

On Dec. 16, it was cold and damp. Still, it was a chance to be a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. This was not on my “bucket list,” but it should have been. The first thing I noticed was the bell was smaller than I expected. It was easy to ring, and I did so during my entire short one-hour shift. As I settled into ringing the bell, the generosity of the patrons of Gould’s Supermarket was astounding. Some gave change, most gave dollar bills, and an occasional fiv...

Zettel ready to tackle anything

Back when he was playing baseball, there were times when Anthony Zettell admittedly lost his cool.“I was a really good pitcher,” Zettel said. “Some games, I’d throw a shutout, sometimes I’d give up a lot of runs. I’d get worked up. Baseball’s a sport where if you lose your composure on the pitching mound, you do worse.“In football, if you lose your composure, you just play harder.”Looks like Penn State̵...

Tackling lost in era of supreme offenses

ATLANTA — Jessie Tuggle knows a thing or two about tackling. They didn’t call him the “Hammer” for nothing. When the retired linebacker gets together with other former players, one subject inevitably comes up.These guys today just don’t tackle like we used to.“A kid has played in high school and played in college, so you assume when he gets to the NFL … that he knows how to tackle,” said Tuggle, who was credited w...
