Berwick continued its strong start to the boys volleyball season with a 3-0 win over Crestwood that saw all three sets go down to the wire. Scores were 25-23, 27-25 and 26-24.

Dylan Michael (13 kills, nine service points, nine digs), Yordin Cruz (two aces, 10 service points, eight digs) and Gabe Oliver (10 kills, 11 digs) led the Bulldogs.

Crestwood’s Michael Williams finished with 25 assists and eight service points, while Noah Jackson had nine kills and three blocks and Noah Modrovsky had nine service points, four kills and three blocks. Crestwood falls to 2-3.

Wyoming Valley West 3,

Hazleton Area 0

The Spartans earned a 25-11, 25-17, 25-22 sweep.

Kevin Fegal (16 service points, three aces, 15 assists), Brandon Pieszala (seven service points, two aces, three digs) and Tyler Klienback (seven kills, two blocks) led the way.

Hazleton Area was topped by Matt Boretski (15 assists, two blocks, one service point), Aaron Kellmer (five kills, three service points) and William Barrientos (one assist, five service points, three digs).

North Pocono 3,

Tunkhannock 0

The Trojans won in straight sets, 25-12, 25-23, 25-18, as James Ildefonso had a match-high 15 kills and six blocks. Jonathan Haikes (27 assists), Colin Coles (six kills, eight digs) and Vincent Wojnar (five kills, five digs, 13 service points) all chipped in.

Tunkhannock got contributions from Avery Billings (four kills, four blocks, one ace), Logan Dickson (one kill, six service points, four digs) and Evan Turner (eight kills, four blocks, two digs).

MMI Prep 1

The Royals’ doubles teams of Dominic Marchese and Mark Harrison and Joe Jure and Mike Lyons dropped just three games between them.

Evan Spear won a hard-fought, three-set match at No. 1 singles for the Preppers.

Tunkhannock 4,

Wyoming Area 1

The Tigers’ Lucas Straley held off the Warriors’ Justin Alder at first singles to earn a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) win in Tunkhannock’s team victory.

Wyoming Area got a three-set win at No. 2 doubles from Mike Abromouage and Austin Alder.

Wyoming Seminary 5,

Dallas 0

Eamon Gibbons led the Blue Knights’ sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 showing at No. 1 singles. Seminary won all five matches in straight sets.

Nine different Blue Knights players scored, led by Kate Romanowski, who finished with four goals and three assists. Olivia Meuser added three goals and two assists while Abby Straub (two assists), Christina Kilyanek (two assists) and Genevieve Nardone (one assist) all scored two apiece.

Ashley Chase had the lone goal for the Crusaders.

Delaware Valley 6,

Crestwood 5

Natasha Koslop scored all five goals for the Comets, but the host Warriors squeaked out the win.

Bailey Fedun had four goals while Mandy Xu made 11 saves for Delaware Valley.

BOYS LACROSSE

Lake-Lehman 11,

Tunkhannock 7

Owen Morgan scored six goals to lead the Black Knights to a win. Vince Ferrari added three goals while Luke Yaple made 11 saves in net.

Adam Martin and Bradley Martin had two goals apiece for the Tigers.

Delaware Valley 10,

Crestwood 6

The Warriors broke a tie with five goals in the third quarter to beat the Comets. Josh Balcarcel finished with three goals and an assist while Bryce Haraldsen made 12 saves.

COLLEGES

Six locals honored

Luzerne County schools racked up six Freedom Conference weekly awards on Monday.

Misericordia led the way with four going to Tim Burek (pitcher of the week), Reilly Wagner (women’s track athlete of the week) and men’s lacrosse teammates Brandon Winslow (offensive player of the week) and John Tierney (defensive player of the week).

Wilkes’ Jordan Vasarkovy was named women’s tennis player of the week while King’s Josh Mesaris won men’s tennis player of the week.

BASEBALL

Misericordia 17,

Wilkes 7

The Cougars finished a sweep, led by three doubles and three RBI from Connor Smith. Billy Kerwien also had three hits with a home run.

Jack Fischer went 3-for-3 for the Colonels. Tyler Walther and Joshua Slocum (home run) each had two hits and two RBIs.

DeSales 6, King’s 2

The visiting Bulldogs scored all six runs in the sixth inning for the win.

Shawn Stone had two hits for the Monarchs. Kyle Lupas added a hit and an RBI.

MEN’S GOLF

King’s 298, Scranton 324

Teammates Bill Dombroski, Shamus Garyler and Corey Palma all tied for the lead with a 74 at Wyoming Valley Country Club.

All six Monarchs finished under 80.

SOFTBALL

Lady Monarchs split

King’s won the first half of a doubleheader with Keystone 11-3 in five innings before falling in the second 6-3.

Samantha Bloom had a big day, going a combined 6-for-8 with three RBI. Megan Beaupre drove in five runs in the opener as Taylor Norris got the win.

The Colonels finished out their inaugural season at 9-16, falling 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19.

John Pietrzyk had a match-high 17 kills and added two aces and nine digs.

Linsey Parks led the Cougars in a close loss, winning at second singles and teaming with Amberlynn Habich to win at second doubles.
