FIRST TEAM
Brianna Pizzano
Wyoming Area, sophomore
Pizzano, the only district singles champion in school history, made it 2-for-2 on District 2 Class 2A titles. Last year’s Times Leader Player of the Year lost just three games in eight sets while destroying the district field on the way to the gold medal. As the number-one singles player, she led the Lady Warriors to a winning record in the Wyoming Valley Conference and a berth in the District 2 team quarterfinals with the help of a preliminary round road win.
Lily Nowak
Hazleton Area, junior
Nowak helped Hazleton Area to its first district team championship. She reached the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional championship matches in singles, doubles and team play. Her win in a lengthy three-set, second singles match against North Pocono put the Lady Cougars in the team final where she again was part of a singles sweep. Nowak teamed with Stephanie Mazurek on district doubles championships as a freshman and sophomore and shared the Times Leader Player of the Year award with her teammate in 2015. She was a Times Leader all-star last season.
Camryn Cassetori
Holy Redeemer, sophomore
Cassetori reached the District 2 Class 2A finals in team play as Holy Redeemer’s number-one singles player and in doubles with partner Lauren LaMarca, along with advancing to the semifinals in singles. She went 10-2 at number-one singles to help the Lady Royals finish as the Wyoming Valley Conference’s best Class 2A team with a 12-1 regular-season record.
Nicole Joanlanne
Wyoming Seminary, sophomore
Joanlanne repeats as a Times Leader all-star. She was the number-one singles player on an 11-2 team – third-best in the Wyoming Valley Conference – and advanced to the District 2 Class 2A semifinals in singles, doubles and team competition.
Hannah Bonk
Dallas, senior
Bonk reached the District 2 Class 2A semifinals in both singles and doubles play. She led Dallas to a 9-4 Wyoming Valley Conference record and a berth in the district team tournament as the fifth seed.
Lauren LaMarca
Holy Redeemer, senior
LaMarca joined teammate Camryn Cassetori to form a doubles team for the District 2 Class 2A tournament and they won seven straight sets, including the first set of the championship match, before settling for a second-place finish. She had a key win at second singles to send Holy Redeemer to the district team final and also reached the quarterfinals of the singles tournament.
SECOND TEAM
Isabella Arndt, Berwick, senior
Kira Meager, Coughlin, senior
Sofia Losen, Hazleton Area, senior
Mikayla Reynolds, Dallas, senior
Emily Urbanski, Wyoming Seminary, sophomore
Katharine Pinto, MMI Prep, sophomore
Abby Connors, Pittston Area, junior
COACH OF THE YEAR
KATIE PAVLICK
Hazleton Area
Make it 2-for-2 for Hazleton Area’s Pavlick, who repeats as Times Leader Coach of the Year. The latest honor comes after leading Hazleton Area to a repeat of its Wyoming Valley Conference championship before capturing its first District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional championship. The Lady Cougars went unbeaten in the regular season, improving to 25-1 in the WVC in two seasons under Pavlick.
The former Bishop Hafey, Hazleton Area and Bloomsburg University player is 33-6 in the conference in three seasons as coach, including 2015 at MMI Prep. Along with the wins, Pavlick has continued to increase the number of players in the program, which was unable to complete a full lineup as recently as 2014.
