Wido, from Shickshinny (Northwest Area), was an All-American last season as a freshman as he captured both the indoor and outdoor championships in men’s compound.

“It’s been hard to get down to the range and practice as much as I have in the past few years with me being so busy with school,” Wido said. “But I plan on picking up right where I left off last year. I believe I’m mentally stronger than I have ever been despite being away from shooting since last May.”

Wido has goals this season, but the biggest one isn’t about himself.

“My goals individually are to top all of my scores from last year’s tournaments,” he said. “However, my biggest goal would definitely be to help bring home the Compound Team National Championship that we were so close to bringing back to Penn College last year.”

Penn coach Chad Karstetter feels that Wido can accomplish anything he sets his mind to.

“What can a coach say about a young man that very seldom misses the middle of any target he aims at,” the coach said. “I see Danny having another remarkable year.”

Like Wido, Karstetter is hoping to bring home the team championship.

“We lost the team round by one arrow last year and I’m pretty confident we will be shooting for the gold this time around.”

Wido and the Wildcats will open the season at the Penn State Indoor Saturday followed by the World Archery Festival Feb. 19-21 in Las Vegas and the Eastern Regionals March 12-14 in Harrisonburg, VA.

SUCHOSKI DOING THE JOB – Junior Ken Suchoski of Bear Creek (Wyoming Seminary) is having another solid season with the Middlebury College men’s hockey team.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound forward has five goals and 11 assists for 16 points with a game-winner. He had a goal and an assist in a 7-4 victory over Colby last Friday and an assist in a 5-2 triumph over Bowdoin last Saturday. He has 16 goals and 39 assists in 66 career games for the Panthers.

“Ken has been one of our top players again this season,” coach Bill Beaney said. “His responsibilities have continued to grow and he is the quarterback on our first PP (power play) and is on the top PK (penalty killing) unit. He combines great skating skill with excellent hockey awareness to be, in my opinion, playing at an all-star level. He certainly has become a leader on the Panther team.”

Middlebury is 9-3-4 overall and 6-2-4 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

SAMPSON HELPS ROYALS – Junior Allison Sampson (Hazleton Area) is a key member of the Scranton women’s swim team and helped the Royals post an 11-0 dual meet record this season. It’s the fourth unbeaten dual season and the 11 victories ties a school record.

Sampson competes in the butterfly and captured the 100 fly in last week’s 116-87 victory over Catholic. Prior to that, she won the 200 fly in a 123-81 triumph over Misericordia. She also swims in distance freestyle races.

“Allison is an outstanding athlete and an exceptional distance swimmer,” coach Paul DeAngelo said. “She concentrates on the distance workouts for most all practices and she’s in tremendous shape.”

DeAngelo feels that Sampson will do well in the upcoming Landmark Championships (Feb. 13-15 in King’s Point, N.Y.). She will compete in the 200 fly and the 500 and 1,650 freestyle races.

“I am very confident that Allison will have a remarkable championship and I’m positive that she will be a future leader of this team,” DeAngelo said. “She is a great role model for the underclassmen and I’m very proud of her accomplishments both in and out of the water.”

DUO WITH BRONCS – Junior Jillian Rubbico (Coughlin) and freshman Krista Musinski (Wyoming Area) are members of the Rider College women’s track team.

Rubicco is a sprinter.

“Jillian did well in the early season meets,” coach Bob Hamer said. “She struggled a bit last year, but this year she has regained her fitness that she lost due to injuries and she is getting closer to achieving the results she desires.”

Hamer feels that Rubbico is close to having a breakout effort for the Broncs.

“I have been very impressed with her work ethic and determination and it is only a matter of time before she has a great race that will give her the confidence to take her performances to the next level.”

Musinski is a member of the jump team.

“Krista is adjusting to the demands of college training and the top level competition that she faces in every meet,” Hamer said. “She is working really hard in practice to fine tune her technique. I feel that it’s only a matter of time before she hits a few jumps and gains the confidence to compete at this level.”

MOYER ON THE SPOT – Sophomore Christopher Moyer (Bishop Hafey) is a member of the Saginaw Valley State men’s bowling team.

Moyer struggled last season as a freshman and was in the 24th position on the team after tryouts. He averaged just 174 after carrying a 225 average in high school.

“Chris met with me after the tryouts and we discussed the problems he had with his physical and mental game that would need to be corrected before he would be able to make the transition from a ‘house’ bowler to a ‘college tournament player’,” coach Dan Dorion said. “Chris dedicated himself to changing his game and it showed because at the end of the season he established himself in the top eight heading into post-season tournaments.”

Moyer saw just limited action in the Sectionals but when players ahead of him struggled at the Nationals, he helped the Cardinals finish second.

In August, Moyer won a tournament that gave him a paid spot in a PBA Tournament to again show that he wanted to continue playing at a higher level.

“However, he struggled again in tryouts this year but has worked hard all season long to get back into the top eight and in the last month he regained his spot,” Dorion said. “The next step in his progress is to work on his mental game to toughen him up to the rigors that collegiate competition and then the PBA competition will demand from him.”

LISOFSKY A WINNER – Kutztown junior Lynn Lisofsky (Coughlin) captured the 500 meter dash at the Bucknell Invitational last Saturday in Lewisburg.

Lisofsky was clocked in 1:20.13 to beat a field of eight and finished almost five seconds in front of the second-place finisher. She also ran the leadoff leg on the team’s 1,600 relay which finished sixth in a time of 4:11.89.

Lisofsky recently finished fourth in the 400 meter dash (1:04.07) and helped the 1,600 relay team finish second at the Kutztown Invitational.

Lock Haven senior Cassie Snider (Dallas) finished fourth in the long jump (15-4 ) at Bucknell. She also finished 18th out of 40 runners in the 200 meter dash (27.65).

REYNOLDS BOWLS ’EM OVER – Junior Angela Reynolds (Northwest Area) is having another solid season with the Delaware State women’s bowling team, which has a 56-14 record and is ranked third in the country.

Reynolds has a 196.3 average for the Hornets and posted a season-high 246 single and averaged 218 for five games to help the team capture the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North title. That victory earned Delaware State the top seed in the MEAC Tournament March 19-21 in Greensboro, N.C.

GILLIGAN SWITCHES SPORTS – Katie Gilligan was a track and cross country runner at Dallas High and competed in both sports at the Coast Guard Academy until a stress fracture ended her career.

Last spring, Gilligan joined the Coast Guard sailing team and last October she was a member of the eight person team that took first place at the McMillan Cup regatta at the Naval Academy. The Bears followed that up by finishing second in the prestigious Kennedy Cup.

This spring, Gilligan will spend a semester at Navy where she hopes to compete with the Midshipman sailing team.
