PECKVILLE – Dunmore captured its third straight District 2 Class 2A football championship Friday night despite some scary moments along the way when head coach Jack Henzes collapsed on the sideline during the second quarter.

Dunmore assistant coach Greg Dohlon, Henzes’ son-in-law, said after the game that Henzes was sitting up and talking at Mercy Hospital where he was being evaluated. The 73-year-old coach has a history of heart problems.

The Bucks already led Lakeland, 21-0, with 5:08 left in the second quarter when Henzes went down on the sideline. After the game was stopped for nine minutes for Henzes to be rushed off the field on a stretcher, Dunmore went on to complete the 35-8 victory.

“The kids were shaken, but once we told them coach was all right, they knew what coach would want us to do and they did it,” Dohlon said.

Henzes ranks second in state history and first among active coaches in career wins. His 340-144-6 records is behind only former Berwick, Lake-Lehman and Wyoming Valley West coach George Curry.

“We tried to do what he would want,” said senior running back/linebacker Michael Perry, who ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns while also having a busy night defensively. “We accomplished the goals he had for us.”
