Duke tops UConn in battle of coaches

NEW YORK — The winningest matchup of Division I coaches was definitely one-sided.

Seventh-ranked Duke and Mike Krzyzewski won another NIT Season Tip-Off on Friday with a 68-59 victory over No. 13 Connecticut and Jim Calhoun.

The Hall of Fame coaches set the record for total career wins in a game and Krzyzewski now has 839, fourth on the all-time list, and Calhoun still has 809, good for sixth place.

The Blue Devils (6-0) dominated the Huskies (4-1) in every category in extending its winning streak in the tournament to 12 games with their third straight title (2000, 2005) and fourth overall (1985).

The win also snapped Connecticut’s four-game winning streak in the series with the last two victories both coming in Final Fours — the 1999 national championship game and the 2004 semifinals.

West Virginia 73, Texas A&M 66

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Da’Sean Butler scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half to lead No. 8 West Virginia to a victory over Texas A&M in the 76 Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Butler added five rebounds and five assists for the Mountaineers (4-0), who advanced to Sunday’s tournament final. Devin Ebanks came off the bench to score 14 points and nine rebounds, and Darryl Bryant chipped in with 12 points.

B.J. Holmes and Donald Sloan scored 18 points apeice for the Aggies (5-1). Bryan Davis added a season-high 10 rebounds.

With the score at 44-all, Butler scored 10 points during a 12-1 surge that gave West Virginia a 56-45 lead with 11:47 to play.

Syracuse 85, Columbia 60

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Wes Johnson had a career-high 26 points, Arinze Onuaku added 12 points, and No. 10 Syracuse beat Columbia.

It was the 805th career win for Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, seventh all-time in Division I and one more than Eddie Sutton.

Facing its second straight Ivy League opponent, Syracuse (6-0) struggled to pull away from the Lions (2-2) in the first half before dominating the second.

Five points from Onuaku — on a three-point play and layup off a feed from Johnson — and Johnson’s 3-pointer from the left side built Syracuse’s 36-27 halftime lead to 44-27 with 17:31 left.

Then, in a span of 67 seconds, Johnson hit a pair of 3s and Mookie Jones hit another from the top of the key to complete a 19-3 spurt and boost the lead to 55-30 at 13:55.

Marquette 79, Michigan 65

ORLANDO, Fla. — Lazar Hayward scored 22 points and Jimmy Butler had 17 to lead Marquette past No. 15 Michigan at the Old Spice Classic.

Darius Johnson-Odom added 14 points for Marquette (6-0), which will play in the tournament championship game Sunday.

Michigan (3-1) got 22 points from Manny Harris.

Harris had seven points as Michigan opened the second half with a 12-4 spurt to cut its deficit to 48-47. But Hayward scored six points and Butler added four in a 10-0 run by Marquette that made it 58-47 with 12 minutes to play.

Tennessee 86, College of Charleston 69.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Scotty Hopson scored 21 points and Tyler Smith added 18 to lead No. 9 Tennessee to a win over College of Charleston.

Charleston (1-3) stayed close by going 10 for 17 from 3-point range, but Tennessee (5-1) went on a 9-0 run to take a 76-61 lead with just under 6 minutes left.

The Volunteers struggled at the free throw line early in the game, going 6 for 13, but they connected on 13 of their next 16 the rest of the way. They also controlled the glass all night, with a 44-24 rebounding advantage over the Cougars.

Donavan Monroe led Charleston with 16 points and Jeremy Simmons added 15.

St. John’s 77, Siena 68

PHILADELPHIA — D.J. Kennedy scored 23 points to lead St. John’s to a victory over Siena in the Philly Hoop Group Classic.

Kennedy shot 8-for-12 from the field while also adding six rebounds and five assists for the Red Storm (4-0). Dwight Hardy also chipped in with 13 points.

Clemson 87, Long Beach State 79

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Tanner Smith scored 17 points and Demontez Stitt had 16 points and five assists to lead No. 19 Clemson to a victory over Long Beach State in the 76 Classic.

Andre Young added 13 points and Trevor Booker had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers (5-1), who shot 57.6 percent.

T.J. Robinson scored a career-best 25 points and tied a career high with 15 rebounds for the 49ers (3-3), who have lost three of four.

WOMEN

Notre Dame 84, San Diego State 79

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands — Freshman Skyler Diggins scored 21 points to lead No. 5 Notre Dame to a victory over No. 23 San Diego State in the Paradise Jam.

The win was Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw’s 500th at the school and 588th overall.

The Irish (4-0) jumped out to a 21-point lead in the first half and led 44-29 at the break. The Aztecs whittled it down to 81-79 with 29 seconds left before Brittany Mallory made three of four free throws to seal the win.

Xavier 76, Kansas 71

FREEPORT, Bahamas — Amber Harris scored 22 points and had nine rebounds to help Xavier beat Kansas at the Junkanoo Jam.

Xavier (4-0) led 72-67 with 50 seconds left after Harris made two free throws. Kansas then hit four straight from the foul line to make it 72-71 with 27 seconds remaining.

Harris then made two more free throws and after a defensive stop, Special Jennings sealed the win from the foul line. She finished with 17 points. Ta’Shia Phillips added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Danielle McCray led Kansas (3-1) with 23 points.

Duke 70, Western Kentucky 47

CANCUN, Mexico — Jasmine Thomas scored 20 points and Duke beat Western Kentucky.

The Blue Devils (4-1) led by nine at halftime and opened up the second half with a 14-3 run over the first 6 minutes to take control of the game. Western Kentucky cut its deficit to 15 on Kenzie Rich’s 3-pointer that made it 42-27, but the Blue Devils quickly stretched the lead back to 20 and put the game away.

Courtney Clifton scored 11 points to lead the Lady Toppers (3-1). Lashay Davis added 10.

Texas 73, Mississippi State 55

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands — Ashleigh Fontenette scored 20 points to lead Texas in the the Paradise Jam.

Fontenette was 9 for 10 from the field for Texas (3-1). Brittainey Raven added 14 points for Texas, and Kathleen Nash had 12.

Armelie Lumanu led Mississippi State (4-1) with 14 points.

Virginia 84, Indiana 79

FREEPORT, Bahamas — Monica Wright had 22 points and 11 rebounds to help Virginia beat Indiana at the Junkanoo Jam.

Whitny Edwards added 17 points and China Crosby had 12 points and seven assists for the Cavaliers (4-1), who advanced to the championship game of the Reef Division. Virginia will next face South Dakota State.

Jori Davis scored 33 points and Linsday Whitney added 15 for Indiana (3-2).

Oklahoma 75, South Carolina 67

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands — Nyeshia Stevenson scored 16 points and Oklahoma used a second-half surge to hold off South Carolina in the Paradise Jam.

The Sooners (3-1) built a 20-point lead midway through the first half before South Carolina rallied to within 45-43 with 14:07 left in the game. Oklahoma countered with a 9-0 run to restore a 11-point advantage.

South Carolina (2-2) wasn’t finished, closing to 67-64 with 4:50 left, but could get no closer.

Whitney Hand added 15 points, Danielle Robinson 14, and Amanda Thompson had 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Oklahoma, which will play No. 23 San Diego State on Friday.

Freshman Kelsey Bone led South Carolina with 18 points and six rebounds.
