WILKES-BARRE TWP. -- Cali Berriman and Heather Kozimor scored two goals each as King’s defeated Manhattanville 7-1 at home on Saturday and clinched a berth in the Freedom Conference field hockey tournament.
Kozimor started the Monarchs off with a goal at 19:20 in the first half. Then at the 18:51 mark, Berriman took the lead to 2-0. Jackie Sikora netted the third goal for King’s off of a Berriman cross.
Manhattanville attempted a comeback when Sarah Mason scored with help from Jen Ascencio near the end of the first half.
Shawna Walp continued King’s assault with a goal at 47:24 of the second half. Briana Turnbaugh pushed the lead to 5-1 on an assist from Jackie Sikora. Berriman and Kozimor had the last two goals for the Monarchs, who improve to 9-7 overall.
Misericordia’s Nick Ferguson propelled his team to a victory with a 50-yard free kick in the 55th minute of the match at Mangelsdorf Field.
The Cougars started quickly in the first half as Andy Bush scored the first goal in the third minute. DeSales tied the game less than three minutes later.
The score stayed 1-1 until the second half when Ferguson converted the game winner for the Cougars (8-4-3).
Joey Bender of the Monarchs notched the first goal on an assist from Greg DeMaio. Dan Horn increased the lead to 2-0 for King’s (11-4-1).
Misericordia defeated DeSales to clinch a Freedom Conference playoff spot. The Cougars (7-10) controlled the game in the first half and finished with 10 shots on goal. After several close misses, Kim Suchoski netted a goal with six minutes left in the half off a corner kick. She was assisted by Sam Helmstetter and Lauren Payne.
The Cougars came out aggressively in the second half with Kristen Gedon scoring in the 59th minute. However, DeSales was awarded a penalty kick three minutes later and converted to keep the game close until the end. .
Lora Fink and Brittany Kanichij scored two goals each to help FDU-Florham rout King’s (4-13). Ashley Vieira began the Devils’ day with a goal at 26:01 in the first half. Michelle Felix also scored in the win.
King’s goalkeeper Melissa D’Aniello had four saves.
With 10 kills and two blocks, Kat Clericki helped the Monarchs (18-10) register a sweep of Ursinus. The scores were 25-10, 25-10, 25-14.
Kaitlyn Malshefski added eight kills, seven digs, and three blocks. Kelly Greenway finished with 25 assists and seven digs, and Danielle Belfanti had 16 digs.
Cailin McCullion had nine kills as the Cougars defeated Arcadia, 25-16, 25-10, 25-10.
Lexie Goble had eight kills in the win, and Kristin Hoffman had 23 assists.
Misericordia defeated Cedar Crest, led by nine kills and 12 digs from Shannon Kane. The scores were 25-17, 25-16, 25-23.
Krystal Burford notched seven kills, and Jesse Karger chipped in 17 digs for the Cougars.
Misericordia fell at a tri-meet against East Stroudsburg (158-104) and Kutztown (166-88). However, Chelsea Mixon and Megan McChesney notched individual wins against East Stroudsburg. Mixon took first in the 200 freestyle (2:05:7) while McChesney won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:28:6. Teaming with Abby Kocon, Kiana Ramirez and Alicia Bryk, Mixon won the 200 free relay against East Stroudsburg with a time of 1:45:9.
