No. 7 Georgetown ruins No. 2 Villanova’s streak

WASHINGTON — Austin Freeman scored 25 points, Jason Clark had 24, and No. 7 Georgetown forced 16 first-half turnovers in a 103-90 victory Saturday that ended No. 2 Villanova’s 11-game winning streak and ruined the Wildcats’ perfect Big East record.

Georgetown (17-5, 7-4) led by as many as 23 points in the first half and 50-31 at halftime. Villanova (20-2, 9-1) cut the margin to 10 but never threatened to complete the comeback in the game played on a day the nation’s capital was blanketed with well over a foot of snow.

The Hoyas went 39 or 50 at the free throw line, led by Greg Monroe, who went 11 of 14 and scored 19 points. Villanova was 17 of 23 from the line.

Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher each scored 24 points for the Wildcats, whose winning streak included an 82-77 victory over Georgetown. Villanova’s other loss was to Temple on Dec. 13.

No. 1 Kansas 75, Nebraska 64

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Cole Aldrich scored six points during a 16-1 run and No. 1 Kansas used a big second half to beat Nebraska and stretch its home winning streak to 55.

The heavily favored Jayhawks (22-1, 8-0 Big 12) led almost the entire first half but Nebraska charged out after the break on a 10-2 tear and silenced the sellout crowd that had expected a comforting rout following consecutive overtime scares on the road.

No. 4 Kentucky 81, LSU 55

BATON ROUGE, La. — Freshman DeMarcus Cousins had 19 points and 13 rebounds for his sixth consecutive double-double for Kentucky.

Cousins, who played only 20 minutes, is eighth in the country in doubles-doubles with 14 and 24th in the nation in rebounding.

No. 6 West Virginia 79, St. John’s 60

NEW YORK — Da’Sean Butler scored a season-high 33 points, hitting all seven 3-point attempts, and West Virginia rallied for the victory.

The Mountaineers (19-3, 8-2 Big East) trailed 43-30 more than 4 minutes into the second half before storming into the lead behind a trapping defense and a barrage of 3-pointers.

Oklahoma 80, No. 9 Texas 71

NORMAN, Okla. — Tommy Mason-Griffin scored 24 points for Oklahoma and Cade Davis added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the second double-double of his career.

Texas (19-4, 5-3 Big 12) cut a 19-point, second-half deficit to five in the final 2 minutes but was hampered the whole game by free-throw shooting. Texas made just 10 of its 27 foul shots and were 4 of 11 in the second half.

No. 10 Duke 66, Boston College 63

BOSTON — Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith scored 21 points apiece to lead Duke.

Boston College cut a 10-point halftime deficit to 64-63 on Reggie Jackson’s long 3-pointer with 16 seconds left. Scheyer was fouled and made both free throws before BC’s Joe Trapani put a long 3-point attempt off the front of the rim at the buzzer.

No. 10 Kansas St. 79, Iowa St. 75

AMES, Iowa — Denis Clemente scored a season-high 30 points, including six 3-pointers, and Kansas State won its fourth straight road game.

Curtis Kelly and Jacob Pullen added 15 points each for the Wildcats, who also extended their winning streak over the Cyclones to eight games dating to 2006.

UNLV 88, No. 12 BYU 74

LAS VEGAS — Junior guard Tre’Von Willis had a career-high 33 points to lead UNLV into a first-place tie with BYU in the Mountain West Conference.

Willis, who finished with eight assists and five rebounds for the Rebels (19-4, 7-2), scored 21 in the first half as UNLV jumped to leads of 15-2 and 47-18. Willis, whose previous high was 30 points at TCU on Jan. 23, was 11 of 20 from the field, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range.

No. 14 Tennessee 79, South Carolina 53

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Wayne Chism scored a career-high 30 points as No. 14 Tennessee routed South Carolina.

Chism was 11 for 17 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and hit 6 of 8 free throws. His previous high of 27 points came against Auburn on March 14, 2009.

No. 15 New Mexico 88, San Diego St. 86, OT

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Darington Hobson scored eight of his 29 points in overtime, including two free throws with 2.7 seconds remaining, to lift No. 15 New Mexico to a thrilling victory over San Diego State.

Hobson added 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and the Lobos (21-3, 7-2) won their seventh straight to forge a three-way tie atop the Mountain West standings. After UNLV’s 88-74 win over BYU, New Mexico shares first place with the Rebels and Cougars.

No. 16 Wisconsin 62, Michigan 44

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jason Bohannon scored 18 points to lead Wisconsin.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Matt Bouldin scored 19 points and Gonzaga pulled away at the end, closing the game with an 8-1 run.

Richmond 71, No. 19 Temple 54

RICHMOND, Va. — Kevin Anderson scored 16 of his 29 points in a blistering first half for Richmond.

The Spiders (18-6, 7-2 Atlantic 10) shot 77 percent in the first half against one of the nation’s top defensive teams and led by 23 points in the second half. They withstood a 19-4 burst by Temple and became the first team to surpass its scoring average against the Owls this season.

Lavoy Allen had 17 points and 19 rebounds for Temple (19-5, 7-2), which lost for just the second time in 10 games.

Texas A&M 78, No. 20 Baylor 71

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Bryan Davis scored 22 points and B.J. Holmes hit three late 3-pointers to lead Texas A&M.

Baylor (17-5, 4-4 Big 12) led for most of the game until Texas A&M was able to rally behind the key 3-pointers by Holmes.

Texas A&M (17-6, 6-3), the Big 12’s worst 3-point shooting team, stayed true to form for most of the game, finishing 4 of 18 from behind the arc. But Holmes, a 5-foot-11 junior, made 3s with 5:19 and 4:52 remaining to bring the Aggies within one point each time.

No. 21 Georgia Tech 73, North Carolina St. 71

ATLANTA — Zachery Peacock scored 22 points and freshman Derrick Favors added 16 as Georgia Tech held off North Carolina State.

The Yellow Jackets (17-6, 5-4) improved to 12-1 at home, and they have won four of six in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Georgia Tech struggled to hold off the last-place Wolfpack, however, despite leading by 16 points with 5:01 remaining.

No. 22 Pittsburgh 83, Seton Hall 58

PITTSBURGH — Gilbert Brown bounced back from a scoreless game with 23 points and No. 22 Pittsburgh nearly shut out Seton Hall scoring leader Jeremy Hazell in a rout that avenged a loss to the Pirates less than two weeks ago.

Hazell, the Big East’s No. 2 scorer with a 23.0 points per game average, had his second successive subpar game against Pitt with two points on 1-of-7 shooting in 32 minutes after not starting.

Hazell, held to nine points after getting into foul trouble during the Pirates’ 64-61 victory on Jan. 24, scored 32 points in an 81-71 loss to No. 2 Villanova on Tuesday and had a combined 60 points in his previous two games.

No. 24 Northern Iowa 55, Southern Illinois 52

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Adam Koch scored 11 consecutive points for Northern Iowa down the stretch and the 24th-ranked Panthers rallied to beat Southern Illinois.

The Panthers (21-2, 12-1 Missouri Valley) improved to 11-0 at home this season with their seventh straight win over the Salukis in Cedar Falls. Koch had 16 of his 21 points in the second half.

Mississippi 74, Alabama 67

OXFORD, Miss. — Chris Warren scored 21 points to help No. 25 Mississippi come back from 19 points down to beat Alabama.

Terrence Henry had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Rebels (17-6, 5-4 Southeastern) who snapped a two-game losing streak. The Rebels made 22 of 29 free throws in the second half.

Minnesota 66, Penn State 64

STATE COLLEGE— Lawrence Westbrook’s long jumper as time expired capped a frantic final minute and Ralph Sampson III had 13 points and two key blocks late to lead Minnesota past Penn State.

Westbrook skipped to center court to join his jubilant teammates after his desperation shot from the left corner went in to give Minnesota (14-8, 5-5 Big Ten) just its second road victory of the season.
