Northwestern knocks off another unbeaten

RALEIGH, N.C. — Michael Thompson and Northwestern made another unbeaten look, well, pretty beatable.

Thompson scored 22 points to lead the Wildcats past North Carolina State 65-53 on Tuesday night in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Jeremy Nash added 12 points for Northwestern (6-1), which ran its winning streak to five and in a five-day span has given three unbeaten power-conference teams their first losses.

The Wildcats followed neutral-site victories over Notre Dame and Iowa State by leading the Wolfpack nearly from start to finish, went up by 14 and held off N.C. State’s best attempt to get within one possession of them.

In claiming a win in what coach Bill Carmody called “one of those grind-it-out kind of games,” they added another impressive line to a fast-growing postseason resume that they hope will earn them their first NCAA tournament berth.

North Carolina 89, Michigan St. 82

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Ed Davis scored a career-high 22 points Tuesday night to help No. 10 North Carolina beat No. 9 Michigan State in a rematch of last season’s national championship game won by the Tar Heels.

Larry Drew II had a career-best with 18 points for the Tar Heels (7-1), who led most of the game before having to hold off a rally in the final minutes. North Carolina shot 58 percent and led by as many as 19 points early in the second half, beating Michigan State (5-2) for the second straight year in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Temple 76, W. Michigan 70

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Ryan Brooks had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead four Temple players in double figures as the Owls topped Western Michigan 76-70 Tuesday night.

Craig Williams and Juan Fernandez had 14 points each for Temple (5-2), and Lavoy Allen added 13.

Cincinnati 94, Texas Southern 57

CINCINNATI — Rashad Bishop scored 14 points in a balanced offense Tuesday night, and No. 22 Cincinnati rolled to a victory over Texas Southern in its first game as a ranked team in nearly four years.

Purdue 69, Wake Forest 58

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — E’Twaun Moore scored 22 points to help No. 4 Purdue beat Wake Forest in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Florida 80, Florida A&M 59

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Dan Werner scored 16 points, Alex Tyus added 15 and No. 13 Florida beat Florida A&M.

Notre Dame 80, Idaho State 70

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Carleton Scott leapt high and got his left hand on an alley-oop pass from Luke Harangody and deflected it in, igniting an 18-2 run that let Notre Dame break the game open in beating Idaho State.

Harangody led the Irish (7-1) with 27 points and 12 rebounds to become the first Notre Dame player with 2,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds.
