The Pittsburgh Penguins organization re-signed restricted free-agent goaltender John Curry and free-agent forwards Wade Brookbank and Wyatt Smith to two-way contracts on Friday.
All three will most likely start the 2009-10 season in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Curry, 25, signed a two-year deal. His chances at winning the backup job in Pittsburgh were greatly diminished when the Penguins signed veteran goalie Brent Johnson to a one-year, one-way contract earlier this month.
Curry has been the Penguins’ top minor-league goalie the past two seasons, helping Wilkes-Barre/Scranton reach the Calder Cup Final in 2007 after signing as a free agent from Boston University. He will likely join Adam Berkhoel and Brad Thiessen as options in net for WBS.
Brookbank and Smith each received one-year contracts.
Brookbank, 31, split last season between the Carolina Hurricanes and Norfolk Admirals, recording one goal in 27 games with the ’Canes and one assist in 24 games with the Admirals.
The native of Lanigan, Saskatchewan, appeared in 39 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton during the 2006-07 regular season, posting one goal and 116 penalty minutes after being acquired by Pittsburgh from the Boston Bruins on Dec.19, 2006.
The 6-foot-4, 225 pound pro has appeared in 127 NHL games with four teams, recording nine points (6+3) and 345 penalty minutes, as well as 255 AHL games with eight teams, posting 11 points (2+9) and 904 penalty minutes.
Smith, 32, split last season between Norfolk and San Antonio, combining for 47 points (19+28) in 71 games.
Selected in the ninth round (233rd overall) of the 1997 NHL draft by the Phoenix Coyotes, Smith has recorded 32 points (10+22) in 211 career NHL games and 339 points (147+192) in 474 career AHL games.
Season tickets, mini-plans and group packages for the 2009-2010 season of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are on sale now, and available by calling 208-7367.
