Prahalis, No. 3 Buckeyes wallop IUPUI

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Samantha Prahalis had 12 points and 10 assists to key Ohio State’s lethal transition game, leading the No. 3 Buckeyes to an 88-33 victory Saturday over IUPUI in the semifinals of the Buckeye Classic.

Jantel Lavender added 12 points and Shavelle Little 10 as the Buckeyes earned a matchup with No. 22 California (3-1) in today’s championship game. The Bears beat Southern 78-47.

Clara Mitchell led IUPUI (0-5) with eight points with Alyse Poindexter adding 11 rebounds. The Jaguars had never faced a team ranked so high.

All 13 players scored for the Buckeyes, and the outcome was never in doubt after they erased a 6-6 tie by scoring 22 of the next 24 points.

No. 5 Notre Dame 81, No. 20 Oklahoma 71

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands — Freshman Skylar Diggins scored 16 points and the Irish used a 20-0 run in the second half to win the Island Division of the Paradise Jam.

Notre Dame (6-0) trailed 51-48 when its defense kicked in, triggering the big run that resulted in a 68-51 lead. The Sooners (4-2), with leading scorer Danielle Robinson on the bench with four fouls, went 0 for 8 from the field and committed eight turnovers during the spurt.

Robinson, who finished with 26 points, got the Sooners within 73-63 by scoring 10 during a 12-5 run. But Oklahoma couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

Diggins was the tournament MVP, while Brittany Mallory added 15 points for Notre Dame.

No. 6 Tennessee 61, UCLA 47

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Taber Spani scored 16 points and the Lady Volunteers handed the Bruins and former assistant coach Nikki Caldwell a humbling loss.

Caldwell played for Tennessee from 1990-94 and coached there from 2002-08. She took over the Bruins at the start of last season.

UCLA led throughout the first half and trailed 43-40 with 9:10 left, when the Lady Vols launched a 10-2 run. A 3-pointer by Angie Bjorklund gave Tennessee a 53-42 lead with 5:12 left.

Markel Walker led UCLA with 19 points and 14 rebounds.

No. 8 Baylor 89, Louisiana-Lafayette 42

WACO, Texas — Freshman Brittney Griner had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and her five blocks keyed a defense that allowed the Bears to coast at the World Vision Basketball Challenge.

Morgan Medlock added 14 points and nine rebounds for Baylor (5-1). Ashley Field added 13 points and Melissa Jones had 10.

Alexis Green had nine points and Jessica Sigue eight for the Ragin’ Cajuns (0-5).

Griner was dominant on both ends during a 17-0 run that put Baylor in control midway through the first half. The 6-foot-8 star had six points and six rebounds during the spurt.

No. 9 Xavier 71, Minnesota 56

FREEPORT, Bahamas — April Phillips scored a career-high 19 points and sparked a second-half run that lifted the Musketeers in the Junkanoo Jam.

Amber Harris added 12 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three blocks for Xavier (5-0). Tyeasha Moss hit four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points.

Minnesota rallied to 48-40 with 8:30 to go before Phillips took over. She scored eight points during a 13-2 run over the next 3 minutes that allowed Xavier to put the game away.

Ashley Ellis-Milan scored 14 points for Minnesota (5-2). Jackie Voigt added 13.

No. 14 Georgia 84, Southern Miss 55

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Jasmine James scored 24 points to lead No. 14 Georgia to a win over Southern Miss in the finals of the Lady Eagle Classic.

Ashley Houts added 17 points for the Lady Bulldogs (5-0). Anne Marie Armstrong finished with 14 points and Porsha Williams had 10.

Houts was the tournament MVP after scoring 34 points in two games.

Georgia opened the game on a 13-2 run that included a pair of 3-pointers by Houts, and never relinquished the lead. Southern Miss out-rebounded Georgia 38-37, but the Lady Bulldogs shot a season-high 48.4 percent from the floor.

Pauline Love scored 18 points to lead Southern Miss (3-3).

No. 15 DePaul 78, Northern Illinois 67

DEKALB, Ill. — Felicia Chester scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures, and the Blue Demons beat the Huskies for the 16th straight time.

Sam Quigley and freshman Anna Martin each had 14 points for DePaul (5-1), which rebounded from a loss at Northwestern on Tuesday. The Blue Demons also lost leading scorer Deirdre Noughton for the season with a torn ACL during that game.

They trailed 13-2 before using 12 first-half turnovers to take a 35-33 halftime lead. DePaul dominated in the second half, leading by 13 down the stretch.

Marke Freeman led the Huskies (3-3) with 26 points, while Kylie York added 16.

TCU 74, No. 18 Kansas 69

FREEPORT, Bahamas — Emily Carter scored 16 points, Eboni Mangum added 14 and the Horned Frogs won the consolation game of the Junkanoo Jam.

Starr Crawford added 11 points for TCU (4-2), which rebounded from a loss to Minnesota by shooting 45.6 percent from the floor and rallying from a 33-29 halftime deficit.

Krysten Boogaard scored 21 points to lead Kansas, while sophomore forward Aishah Sutherland added 16. Danielle McCray finished with 16 points.

Southern Cal 64, No. 19 Mississippi State 60

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands — Aarika Hughes scored 14 points and Southern Cal beat No. 19 Mississippi State, the Trojans’ second straight win over a ranked team.

USC (3-3) had a six-point halftime lead at the Paradise Jam before Mississippi State used a 17-8 spurt to take a 44-41 advantage 5 minutes into the second half. The Trojans trailed 49-48 before going on a 11-2 run to take a 60-51 lead with 5:59 left.

Mississippi State (4-3) scored the next seven points and was within 60-58 after Armelie Lumanu hit two free throws with 28 seconds left. The Lady Bulldogs had a chance to tie it on their next possession but missed a shot.

The Trojans, who beat No. 13 Texas on Friday, made all four of their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Lumanu scored 19 points and Tysheka Grimes added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

No. 21 Vanderbilt 77, N.C. State 71

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Meredith Marsh hit her first five 3-pointers and finished with 25 points. leading No. 21 Vanderbilt to a win over North Carolina State in the championship of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament.

Marsh hit a trio of 3-pointers to get the Commodores (6-0) off to a quick start, and Vanderbilt held the Wolfpack (5-2) scoreless for nearly 8 minutes while building a 13-0 lead.

Nikkitta Gartrell scored 15 points for N.C. State, while Lucy Ellison had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Bonae Holston 13 points and 12 rebounds.

N.C. State trimmed a 20-point second-half lead to 73-65 on Gartrell’s jumper, but Vanderbilt kept the Wolfpack at bay with free-throw shooting, making 28 of 35 for the game — including two by Marsh on a technical called against Gartrell.

Marsh, the tournament MVP, had 16 first-half points without missing a shot, going 4 for 4 behind the 3-point arc with four foul shots.

No. 22 California 78, Southern 47

COLUMBUS, Ohio — DeNesha Stallworth scored 13 points and three teammates also hit double figures to lead the Bears in the opening game of the Buckeye Classic.

Rachelle Federico and Layshia Clarendon each added 11 points and Gennifer Brandon had 10 for Cal (3-1), which advance to Sunday’s championship game against No. 3 Ohio State.

Hannah Kador had 14 points, and Ashley Augerson added 11 for the Jaguars (3-1).

South Carolina 58, No. 23 San Diego State 55

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands — Charenee Stephens scored 20 points, including a key basket with 30 seconds left to lead the Gamecocks to the upset in the Paradise Jam.

After Stephens scored, Jerica Williams hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left to make it 56-55. La’Keisha Sutton then scored on a breakaway moments later, and Quenese Davis missed a potential tying 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

Valerie Nainima scored 11 points for South Carolina (3-3), and Sutton finished with 10.

Allison Duffy led San Diego State (3-3) with 13 points. Jene Morris, who surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career during the game, finished with 11.
