Atlanta scored both goals in the third period, the last by Maxim Afinogenov with 18 seconds left.

It was only the third victory in eight games for the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins (15-8), who have been plagued by injuries after opening the season by winning 12 of their first 15. The Thrashers (10-7-2) fell to 4-5-1 at home.

Evgeni Malkin netted Pittsburgh’s other goal.

Panthers 3, Rangers 2

NEW YORK — Nathan Horton, Jordan Leopold and Steven Reinprecht scored goals and Tomas Vokoun made 32 saves as the streaking Panthers beat the slumping Rangers.

Vinny Prospal and Marian Gaborik scored for the Rangers, who lost for the fourth time in five games.

These teams are going in opposite directions. After a slow start, the Panthers have won eight of 11 (8-2-1). The Panthers won for the second time in two nights, following up on a 2-1 overtime victory at Detroit on Friday.

The Rangers, 7-1 to open the season, dropped their third straight at Madison Square Garden.

Flames 5, Kings 2

LOS ANGELES — Jarome Iginla scored a goal in each period to lead Calgary to victory.

Iginla completed his first hat trick of the season, and ninth of his career, with a shot from the right circle that got past goalie Jonathan Quick with 4:07 left in the game. It was Iginla’s 11th goal in his last nine games.

Senators 5, Sabres 3

OTTAWA — Daniel Alfredsson had two goals and an assist and Filip Kuba had a goal and three assists to lead Ottawa over Buffalo.

Chris Kelly and Milan Michalek also scored for the Senators, who have won three straight.

Red Wings 3, Canadiens 2, SO

MONTREAL — Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored on Detroit’s first two shootout attempts to give the Red Wings a win.

Datsyuk, who netted one of Detroit’s two power-play goals in the first period, deked and put a shot past Carey Price on the Red Wings’ first shootout try.

Hurricanes 3, Lightning 1

RALEIGH, N.C. — Tuomo Ruutu and Jussi Jokinen scored second-period goals, and Manny Legace made 20 saves to help Carolina beat Tampa Bay.

Chad LaRose added a goal with 4:23 remaining in the game.

While Carolina remains near the bottom of the NHL standings, the Hurricanes have won three of their last four and have points in their last five games.

Martin St. Louis scored for the Lightning, and Mike Smith made 24 saves. Tampa Bay entered the game 4-0-3 in its previous seven.

Maple Leafs 2, Capitals 1, SO

TORONTO — Phil Kessel, Niklas Hagman and a couple of good bounces helped pull the Toronto Maple Leafs out of another extended winless slide.

The Toronto forwards scored shootout goals in a victory over Washington, giving the Maple Leafs their first victory in six games.
