KINGSTON – A little rain Monday wasn’t going to dampen Wyoming Valley West’s pristine season thus far.

Nor was an early going by a rebuilding Pittston Area girls soccer team.
Instead, the Spartans overcame the deficit with five consecutive goals to defeat Pittston Area 6-2 and stay undefeated in Division B of the Wyoming Valley Conference.
Bridget Manley scored on a 35-yarder in the 16th minute, erasing Pittston Area’s 1-0 lead and starting a surge of goals. Freshman Kelci Hromisin scored less than a minute later and then less than a minute after her first goal. Rebecca Lipski assisted both scores.
Amanda Harris followed with an unassisted goal, giving the Spartans four goals inside a window of about two minutes.
And Valley West (5-0) made the Patriots’ first goal – by Kelly Krevey on an assist by Donielle Tubioli in the ninth minute – a distant memory.
“It’s going really well,” said Valley West coach Mike Davitt, whose team finished the divisional runner-up to Wyoming Seminary the past two years. Seminary has moved up to Division A. “We have a team concept, obviously, and have to stay in the team concept of moving the ball.
“Just playing simple and playing smart and not trying to do too much. If they stay within the team concept, we’re fine. When we get away from that, that’s when things get more difficult for us.”
After Maria Kayrish increased the lead to 5-1, Pittston Area (0-5) scored its second goal when Alison Merkel found the net in the 30th minute.
Valley West’s defense, though, remained stout in the second half. The Patriots were able to work the wings with some success, but were unable to get many decent scoring chances.
Fullbacks Manley, Sherry Chen, Samantha Patterson and Ellyssa Saroscek and keeper Shelby Butz limited Pittston Area to four shots.
Still, Pittston Area first-year coach Nicole Tieso felt good about her team’s performance.
“We’re filling some gaps and starting to work together,” Tieso said. “Teamwork is the big thing we’re focusing on. Regardless of this score, we played a good game. It was 1-0 in the second half.”
Valley West’s Brianna Evans had that goal on a breakaway in the 64th minute. Pittston Area keeper Lauren Smicherko made a couple big saves late in the game, while midfielder Maria Rogo broke up another breakaway.
