Only five District 2 football programs will be switching classification for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 schools years.
The PIAA released its classification parameters this week, about a month earlier than expected.
Wyoming Area and Meyers are the only Wyoming Valley Conference teams that will move. Wyoming Area will drop from Class 3A to 2A. Wyoming Area was one male under the 3A cutoff. Meyers will move up from Class A to 2A.
Three Lackawanna Conference teams will also be switching classifications. Dunmore will drop from Class 2A to Class A. The Bucks are currently the top-ranked Class 2A team in the state according to the Harrisburg Partiot-News rankings.
Western Wayne will shift from Class 3A to 2A. The team was one male over the cutoff during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Valley View will move from Class 2A to 3A as it was over the 2A limit by two male students.
The cutoff numbers increased in all classifications. They include all voluntary upgrades (teams that decide to play in a higher class) and cooperative agreements with another school.
No District 2 program elected to play higher than its slotted classification. Susquehanna has a co-op agreement with Blue Ridge in football. Its enrollment in football is a combination of both schools.
Here are the new football classifications for District 2 teams and Williamsport, a District 4 team that plays in the WVC. Number in parentheses is male enrollment.
