PHILADELPHIA — Cole Hamels dominated over seven innings and the Philadelphia Phillies capitalized on a Milwaukee miscue to score the only run they would need in a 1-0 victory over the Brewers on Friday night.
Hamels (9-10) continued to receive little run support, but didn’t need much as he breezed to his second straight win and ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 18. He allowed three hits and struck out seven.
Hamels was coming off another sparkling effort on Aug. 29 in his hometown of San Diego, when he allowed four hits in eight scoreless innings. Before that, the left-hander had gone 0-3 with five no-decisions in his previous eight outings.
A Milwaukee miscommunication led to the game’s only run. Center fielder Lorenzo Cain and left fielder Ryan Braun converged on a Shane Victorino fly ball, but it dropped between them for a double, despite Braun’s last-minute lunge.
CHICAGO — Alfonso Soriano and Blake DeWitt hit three-run homers, and Chicago beat New York.
David Wright hit a two-run double and scored in the first inning as the Mets took a 3-0 lead against Randy Wells. Then, with the Cubs ahead 7-4, Wright homered off Andrew Cashner leading off the seventh, giving him three hits.
Luis Hernandez started the eighth against Sean Marshall with his second career homer and first since Sept. 27, 2007. That made it 7-6, but the Mets came up short for the fourth time in five games.
James Russell (1-1) got one out to end the inning. Carlos Marmol worked the ninth for his 26th save.
DeWitt hit his fifth homer in the sixth.
PITTSBURGH — Ryan Doumit had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs, and Garrett Jones drove in three runs to lead Pittsburgh to a victory over Washington.
Pittsburgh’s three rookie regulars also made contributions as Pedro Alvarez hit a two-run double in the fifth, Jose Tabata had two hits and two RBIs and Neil Walker extended his hitting streak to 10 games. That helped the Pirates win for just the second time in seven games while handing Washington its third straight loss.
MIAMI — Logan Morrison hit two stand-up RBI triples, Andrew Miller worked five innings for his first win in more than a year, and Florida beat Atlanta.
Morrison became the eighth player to hit multiple triples in a game this season, according to STATS LLC, after hitting only one in his first 126 at-bats. Both came off Atlanta starter Kenshin Kawakami (1-10), who gave up five hits — all for extra bases — five runs and four walks in three innings.
