ESTERO, Fla. -- Down by as much as 21-points in the third quarter, the Pioneers were able to close the gap created by Florida.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton won Saturday's game in dramatic fashion, scoring 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter alone, capping the run with a 19-yard field goal by David Davis with only three seconds on the clock to seal the team's 11th win of the season.
The Pioneers now control home-field advantage throughout the American Conference playoffs, an advantage they'll certainly use having won a second-best 18 straight home games at Wachovia Arena.
Pioneers' quarterback Ryan Vena completed 23-of-31 passes on the night for 303 yards and seven touchdowns. Receiver Larry Kendrick caught 11 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns. J.J. Outlaw had six catches for 116 yards and four touchdowns. Wyoming Area graduate Rich Musinski had six grabs for 55 yards and one touchdown.
Florida quarterback Chris Wallace completed 23-of-39 passes for 250 yards and five touchdowns. Wallace was intercepted twice, both by Micheaux Robinson, who is now tied with Chris Royal for the Pioneers interception record with 14 in a season.
Firecats receiver Magic Benton, who came out of retirement for Saturday's game, led Florida with 14 grabs for 188 yards and four touchdowns.
The Pioneers will be on a bye during the July 4th weekend before facing Peoria at Wachovia Arena on July 12.
