WILKES-BARRE TWP. -- In a game that showcased only six offensive touchdowns, there was bound to be a point where the defense would come into play.
Unfortunately for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's No. 1 ranked defensive unit, it was Tennessee Valley's that came out on top.
The Vipers held the Pioneers to only two offensive touchdowns (Rich Musinski-18; Larry Kendrick-14) and Ryan Vena to only 16-of-29 passing for 158 yards in a 34-30 loss that eliminated Wilkes-Barre/Scranton from the American Conference playoffs.
Defensive back Barry Drakeford also ran back an interception from Tennessee Valley quarterback Kevin Eakin and Kendrick scored on a 52-yard kickoff return to end the second half to round out the Pioneers' scoring. David Davis also slotted a 40-yard field goal attempt.
For the Vipers, Maurice Brown was quiet on Tennessee Valley's long, drawn-out drives, logging only five catches for 50 yards but managed to grab two of Vipers four offensive scores. Alonzo Nix was the workhorse of Tennessee Valley's offense, grabbing 14 balls for 118 yards and a score.
Eakin finished 26-of-46 for 208 yards and four touchdowns. Travis Blanchard also ran back an interception from Vena for a score.
Tennessee Valley will play the winner of the No. 7 Manchester (10-7) vs. No. 3 Green Bay (12-5) matchup still in progress in Green Bay. That game will take place at the home venue of the higher seed.
