Carlucci, Nastase take top honors at Lupus Loop

Carlucci broke the tape in 17 minutes and 38 seconds, capturing overall honors. Nastase finished 13 seconds later, winning top female honors.

“It went well,” said Carlucci, 23, of Scranton. “I’m very pleased with my time. And I’m even more pleased with the fine turnout. This race isn’t about my time. It’s about supporting this great cause – fighting lupus.”

Carlucci, who ran cross country and track at Scranton High School and Keystone College, ran with the lead pack for the first mile before making his move.

“I surged a little and took the lead at about 1-mile,” said Carlucci. “But I still could hear footsteps behind me (from Rick Yarznbowicz, 23, from Old Forge, who at the time was running second and ended up finishing third in 18:03). So I knew I wasn’t out of the woods just yet. But at about mile 2, I started pulling away.”

In retrospect, Carlucci probably should have been more concerned about being caught by Nastase than Yarznbowicz. Nastase ended up passing Yarznbowicz. Her win was her second in Scranton recently. On Sept. 12, the 24-year-old won the Race for the Cure 5K Run.

‘’It went well here today,” said Nastase, who is from Beaverdale, but currently lives in Dunmore while attending Marywood University as a grad student majoring in Sports Nutrition. ‘’I love running in the fall. And today is such a beautiful day.”

It shouldn’t really surprise anyone that Nastase ran so well and scored such an impressive finish. After all, she ran cross country and track for Bucknell University, a school known for its strong running program.

“I ran with a pack of runners for the first mile,” she said. “Then I just started picking off people.”

It turns out she picked off everybody but Carlucci.

“She’s good at that!” Carlucci said with a smile.
