Five Wyoming Valley Conference teams in baseball and softball will take the next step on the path to a state championship on Monday.

The PIAA released the information for the opening round of both sets of tournaments on Friday for Dallas and Holy Redeemer in baseball and also Hazleton Area, Tunkhannock and Wyoming Area in softball. All games will be played Monday.

On the baseball side, both WVC squads will be playing close to home. In Class 4A, District 2 champion Dallas looks to continue its long winning streak against District 4 champion Athens at 4:30 p.m. at Pittston Area’s field in Hughestown.

Fresh off of a rally to win the Class 3A championship, Holy Redeemer now faces the top seed out of District 11, Tamaqua, at 4:30 p.m. at Hanover Area High School.

For softball, Wilkes will be hosting a tripleheader at its field, with the first two games featuring WVC teams.

The opener will be a Class 6A matchup between Hazleton Area and Coatesville, the No. 4 seed out of District 1, at 2 p.m. The Cougars edged Williamsport in the D2-4 subregional tournament.

Following that game at 4:30 p.m. will be a Class 4A opener with Tunkhannock taking on District 4 champ Shikellamy.

The Tigers beat Wyoming Area for the District 2 title this week, but the Warriors earned a spot into the Class 4A state bracket as well. They will hit the road to play District 11 winner Bangor Area at 3:30 p.m. at Patriots Park in Allentown.

Also at Wilkes’ field will be a Class 3A opener between Mid Valley and North Penn Liberty at 7 p.m.
