LEHMAN TWP. — No controversial call to stop Wyoming Seminary this time.

And no more long league unbeaten streak for Lake-Lehman, either.

Alicia Carr and the rest of the revved-up Blue Knights made sure of it.

Carr assisted on the first goal and scored the last, freshman Mia Magnotta made nine saves in the cage Thursday and Wyoming Seminary extracted a measure of revenge for last year’s District 2 semifinal loss with a dominating 3-0 win on Lehman’s black turf.

“This is the most motivated, as a team, we’ve all been,” Carr said. “Since last year, this is the one game we wanted to come out strong. We all had the memory from last year in the back of our heads. Last year was an unfortunate loss.

“It kept us from going to the state playoffs.”

Lest anyone forgets, Lehman’s 3-2 victory in last year’s district playoffs made Sem pretty heartsick. Especially since the Blue Knights believe a curious goal cost them a shot at extending their 2016 season for at least a couple more games.

With Lehman holding a 1-0 lead at halftime of a 2016 Class A district semifinal battle with Sem, game officials visited the huddles of both teams to double the Black Knights’ lead. They decided a late goal by Lehman near the end of that game’s first half should have been ruled good.

Sem argued that a whistle blew before the mysterious goal went in, causing players to stop their action.

Lehman’s countered that the Black Knights didn’t hear a whistle, and continued their play while whistling a shot into the cage. The scoreboard didn’t change, though, until well into halftime. Lehman went on to win the game by a goal to earn an automatic berth in state play, then went on to win the District 2 title and advance to the PIAA Class A semifinals.

Sem went home to stew through the offseason.

“It happens,” a still-miffed Klassner said Thursday. “It’s happened to us in the past. We’ve been there.”

The Blue Knights were determined not to go there again.

Carr fed Kelsey Reznick for the game’s first score just 2:24 into the game, and the Blue Knights were off and running.

“We actually talked about scoring in the first five minutes,” Klassner said. “Lehman was probably a little shocked at how fast we did come out.”

Sem’s speed wasn’t limited to the scoring.

The Blue Knights constantly beat Lehman to the ball, swarmed around the Black Knights’ best playmakers and ended an unbeaten streak that had covered at least parts of three seasons.

Lehman won the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 with a 13-0-1 record last year and won their first five games this season, giving the Black Knights 19 straight games without a loss since the start of 2016. Throw in two victories that ended the 2015 regular season, and Lehman had a 21-game undefeated streak that was suddenly snapped.

It was also the first time Sem, which lost the last five meetings including three district playoff games between the teams, defeated Lehman since a regular-season meeting in 2013.

“They had a 19-game unbeaten league record,” Klassner said. “We hadn’t beaten Lehman in quite some time. It’s been a while. We have nothing but respect for their program. We knew if we played well, we had a shot.”

Julia Christian put Sem’s second shot into the cage 12:21 before halftime, then Carr drove home the game’s final goal just 1:33 into the second half to pretty much end all suspense.

“We were talking about what happened last year and having it taken away,” Carr said. “But it’s a new year, a new game. We all agreed, as a team, to not worry about what happened last year and not let the officials affect our game. We’re just trying to feed off each other. There’s a lot of communication, which is what we were certainly lacking last year.”

This time, though, something got lost in translation for Lehman.

The Black Knights had two apparent goals disallowed in Thursday’s game. One was apparently ruled to have hit a foot before bounding into the cage. The other was a high backhander that was ruled to be a dangerous shot.

“If that goal was allowed, it was 1-1,” Lake-Lehman coach Jean Lipski said. “I thought we picked it up and stayed right with them. I was really proud of the way the girls never gave in and played right with them to the last second.”

Given a couple of second chances with nullified goals, Sem posted the shutout as Magnotta turned away nine shots on goal and the Blue Knights defense fended off 10 penalty corners.

“Nina Magnotta, for a freshman, really played a pretty good game in goal,” Klassner said. “And our defense played tough. We went at the ball. We knew we had to beat them to the ball.”

The Blue Knights also beat Lehman to the top of the standings.

By the time the final second ran off the clock to trigger an emotional Sem celebration, the Blue Knights were alone in first place in the WVC Division 1 at 6-0, just ahead of 5-0 Wyoming Valley West and 5-1 Lehman.

“It’s early in the season,” Lipski said. “It gives us things to work on. We certainly have some weaknesses we can fix before we continue on. I feel this is a learning curve.”
