Finally the rainy weather has moved out of the area and the high school golf postseason can continue.
After being washed out last week, the Wyoming Valley Conference Team Playoffs will be held on Monday at Fox Hill Country Club with each winner advancing to the District 2 Team Championship on Friday at Fox Hill.
In Class 2A, Wyoming Seminary and Lake-Lehman will battle for supremacy as one of the teams will be the first 2A team other than Holy Redeemer to win the WVC event. The Royals have won the event for all three years there have been two classifications in golf.
The Coughlin and Crestwood dominance in the conference’s Class 3A division will continue as one of the teams will once again claim the title.
The Comets and Crusaders will square off for the third time in the last three years for the WVC 3A championship. The Comets won the last two meetings, while Coughlin claimed the championship the first year of the 3A classification in 2012 knocking off Wyoming Valley West and Pittston Area.
Both championship showdowns are rematches from earlier in the season. Coughlin (10-2) dealt the Comets (10-1) their only loss of the season with a 164-176 win, while the unbeaten Blue Knights (10-0) handed Lake-Lehman (9-1) its only setback this season with a 167-179 victory.
Those matches, however, were at different courses. At Fox Hill, there have been mixed results, and anything can happen.
In last week’s Pre-district tournament, the Crusaders would have ran away with the title — if team scores mattered at that event — because the three lowest 3A scores belonged to Coughlin’s Ryan Keyes, Colin Krokos and Tyler Kurilla. However, when Coughlin and Crestwood went at it earlier at Fox Hill at the Tryba Preseason event, the Comets edged out a one-point victory.
Led by Adam Motovidlak, who claimed the low score in the 2A portion of Pre-districts last week, Lake-Lehman and Wyoming Seminary would have been neck-and-neck. Motovidlak beat out his closest Blue Knights competitor by five strokes. Seminary though had its next three golfers finish a total of eight strokes better than Lehman’s next three. Sem finished 30 shots better than the Black Knights in the team portion of the Tryba event back in August.
