KINGSTON — Styrofoam cups pushed into the chain link fence in left field Monday formed the numbers of the Wyoming Valley West softball players in their final season. If Senior Day was going to be a complete success then a couple of them needed to come through when needed.

They did.

Senior Audi Welles hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and then scored the game-winning run on senior Colleen Cwalina’s double as the Spartans edged Crestwood 5-4 in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 game.

Crestwood fell to 3-7, part of a rough journey to Kingston for the school. Just over the railroad tracks a short distance away, the baseball team ended up losing by a run to Valley West.

Crestwood took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on an RBI single by Katie Thomas and a fielder’s choice by Morghan Murphy.

Valley West (5-5) stranded a runner at third in the sixth, but didn’t squander its chances in the seventh. Junior Morgan Klesko led off and reached second on a throwing error on her grounder. Welles then lined a single to right to tie the score. Cwalina followed and lined double just inside the left-field line and Welles scored from first.

“We were down and we really had to step it up and we did,” Cwalina said. “Without Audi getting on and Morgan getting on, we wouldn’t have scored those runs.”

Welles is the team’s catcher and coach Jess Ras elected to use a courtesy runner for her in the fifth. Not so in the seventh as Welles made the long run home to end the game.

“Sometimes Coach has faith in me,” Welles said. “I knew as soon as Colleen hit that ball that I wasn’t stopping and this was it and I kind of had to score.”

Senior Erin Gibbons added an RBI single in the third and once again was outstanding defensively in center field.

“I have a great senior class and I’m going to miss all six of the girls,” Ras said. “We had a nice talk on Thursday and they knew I expected them to step up this game and for the rest of the season.”

Emily Traficante had an RBI single in the second for Crestwood and Haley Naperkowski added another in the third. However, the Comets’ defense was shaky and committed six errors, leading to three unearned runs.

“I told the girls our hitting was better,” Crestwood coach Adrienne Bannon said, “but our defense let us down when we needed it the most.”

Bienkowski throws perfect game

Holy Redeemer’s Morgan Bienkowski pitched a perfect game, striking out 14 as Holy Redeemer defeated Wyoming Seminary 16-0 in five innings Monday in WVC Division 3 softball.

Redeemer led 2-0 before blowing open the game in the fifth with eight runs. The Royals haven’t allowed a run in all nine divisional games. Bienkowski and Kristen Coffay combined to throw a one-hitter against Seminary on April 10.

Tiana Wren paced the offense with four RBI. Abby Shorts added three more. Bienkowski had three hits.
