SHICKSHINNY — With his long-time nemesis gone from the scene, Raheem Twyman set his sights on reaching the record books.

It may turn out to be his only challenge this season.

Twyman took off right from the start, easily winning both hurdles and adding a high jump win Thursday as the Meyers boys track and field team gave former assistant Hayden White his first victory by dominating Northwest, 96-54 in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 season opener at Northwest High School.

“I knew coach since last year,” Twyman, a senior, said. “He’s a very fair coach. He doesn’t play favorites. Just his practice methods, I feel they’re helping not only the boys, but the girls. They’re seeing how good of a coach he is.”

In the girls meet, Katie Jones captured the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs, Maggie Dow won the pole vault and triple jump and Katie Noss captured the shot put and discus as Northwest rolled to a 102-48 victory.

The helped the Rangers overcome a splendid opening day by Meyers’ two-time state medalist Nalasjia Harris-Johnson, who took the 100 and 200 meter runs, the long jump and led off the winning 400 meter relay team.

“Katie Jones, she’s been around for a long time,” Northwest coach Todd Culver said. “She knows how to win. She finished fourth at districts in the mile last year. She’s a good runner. Our girls throwers are just really, really good and our jumpers do a really good job.”

So does Twyman, a returning state silver medalist in the 300-meter hurdles and defending District 2 champion in the 110 hurdles.

He came out strong at windy Northwest, where Twyman spent past seasons battling three-time District 2 hurdles champion Tyler Burger — who nosed past Twyman for the PIAA Class 2A championship in the 300 hurdles last season.

But Burger’s moved on to Lock Haven this season, where he’s competing in the decathlon as a college freshman. And Twyman’s feeling a twinge of sadness about the lack of competition.

“I wish he was back,” Twyman, a senior, said. “I actually missed that feeling of me getting hyped before the meet, me having a quality performer to run against. Right now, there’s a record. Since I know there’s not much talent left in the Valley (in the hurdles) to give me a run for my money, that’s what I’m focused on.”

The lanky leaper didn’t approach Qadry Ismail’s school and District 2 record of 32.24 in the 300 meters, but plans to keep chopping down that time as the season progresses.

“He definitely has the athletic ability to do it,” White said. “It all depends on how hard he works at it. He definitely has the raw talent to have a chance at the record.”

From the start, Twyman left nothing to chance.

He ran the 300 hurdles in 45 seconds to win by nearly two seconds Thursday, and took the 110 meters in 16.5 to win that event by nearly nine seconds. Twyman also jumped a height of 5-8 to take the high jump.

His performance helped offset a strong opening in the sprints by Northwest’s Tanner Kennedy, who won the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

“Inbetween hurdles, I thought I was a little slow,” Twyman said. “But I’m content where I’m at right now.”

He wasn’t at the finish line with the winning 400-meter relay team, though.

Although Twyman helped Meyers win the Class 2A state title in that event last year, he said the coaching staff told him to save his strength for that event for the team’s upcoming meet with city rival GAR.

“He (White) wanted me to rest up,” Twyman said. “He just wanted me to do my events, see where I’m at.”

Mark Robinson certainly wasn’t resting.

Also a returning member of last year’s state title relay team, Robinson ran the first leg of Thursday’s winning 400 squad and also captured the triple jump.

All that helped bring White coaching success right from the start.

“It’s nice for the first meet to come out and have some good performances,” White said. “Not too worried about times and heights and distances right now, it’s just so early in the season. We felt we just wanted to get out of here with a win.”
