LINDSEY WILLIAMS

School: Holy Redeemer

Year: Junior

Sport, position: Cross country

Family: Kim, mom; Dan, dad; Kelsey, sister; Riley, sister

Last week: Williams wrapped up the regular season undefeated after winning the varsity girls individual title at the WVC cross country championship meet last Wednesday. She finished the 3.1-mile run at the Wyoming County Fairgrounds in 20:03.

What she says: “The main thing I focused on, I wanted to win of course, but I wanted to drop my time from the last time I was there. I wanted to get in the 19s in the course, but I didn’t, I only got a 20:03. … Since I had a couple of people who were really close to me at that race, it got me prepared to run up to that competition. I’m glad I had someone behind me the whole race because it encouraged me to go faster.”

Coach says: “Lindsey is a very hard working athlete with a positive attitude. She believes in herself and she believes what she sets her mind to she can accomplish.”

TYLER STEVENS

School: Northwest

Year: Sophomore

Sport, position: Football, linebacker

Family: Rick, dad; Stacy Pszcizny, mom; Gracie, sister; Nicholas, brother

Last week: Stevens blocked the possible game-winning 41-yard field goal attempt as time expired to seal the Rangers’ 14-13 win over Meyers last Thursday. The win allowed Northwest to clinch a spot in the District 2 Class A playoffs. Stevens also rushed for 14 yards on four carries.

What he says: “In the heat of the moment, I knew I needed to make a big play because (my teammates) always have my back no matter what. It was my turn to make a big play for them. … They (Meyers) had a weak spot and (earlier in the game) my teammate Ezra Judge blocked it. I saw it and I thought ‘Man I think I can get through there’ and I blocked the game-winning field goal. It was one of the best moments of my high school career in sports. I had an interception two weeks before and that was awesome, but this breaks that because you don’t get that opportunity often.”

Coach says: “It was a big win for us and allowed us to finish the season undefeated in the WVC small schools and clinch the 3A-1A Division title. Tyler has progressed and gets better every week. Not only playing well now but I have him for the next two years.” — Northwest head football coach Lon Hazlet
