LEHMAN TWP. — There are just two weeks left in the regular season and both teams can count the number of games they have remaining before districts on one hand.

With a game separating the two teams in both the District 2 Class 2A and Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 standings, Tuesday’s match between the Lake-Lehman and Wyoming Seminary boys soccer teams had a playoff-like atmosphere.

In fact, it could be a preview of what Division 2 fans can look forward to in the Class 2A district tournament.

With so much on the line, the Blue Knights (12-2) were able to avenge their early-season loss to Lake-Lehman (11-2-1) on the back of strong play from junior Edge Miller. The midfielder factored in both of Wyoming Seminary’s tallies, registering a goal and an assist, en route to a 2-1 victory over the Black Knights.

“I’m really proud of my guys tonight. Lehman was just a tough game, so hats off to them,” Wyoming Seminary head coach Rev. Charles Carrick said. “I thought we did a good job of trying to control the ball and creating chances, and we worked for a number of chances. I’m pleased with the high rate. A win like this, having lost to them earlier, is great for setting us up for the end of the season and going into playoffs.

“It should be an interesting next two games with the way the season’s going.”

Miller put the Blue Knights on the board early with an impressive goal just six minutes into the game.

The junior got the ball in traffic, was able to dribble his way past Lake-Lehman defenders with some fancy footwork and put his shot past the Black Knights’ goalkeeper.

The playoff-like atmosphere was evident during the opening goal. As Miller found the ball and started to make his way toward the goal, the Wyoming Seminary bench started chanting “Eat’em up” over and over.

The goal electrified the Blue Knights.

“He’s one of our key players, helping to control the midfield and set up play and score goals,” Carrick said. “His first goal was a great shot and set a really nice tone.”

While Wyoming Seminary took its one-goal lead into the break, the cushion didn’t last long.

It took just 10 minutes into the second half for the Black Knights to even the score.

Lake-Lehman freshman Max Paczewski was able to get past the Wyoming Seminary defense and make his way toward the goal for a one-on-one opportunity against Blue Knights goalie Ryan Anderson, but was pushed from behind before he could get a shot off.

Paczewski was award a penalty kick that he beat Anderson on, choosing to go left with his shot while the sophomore keeper went right, to even the score 1-1 in the 50th minute.

“You just have to have short-term memory,” Anderson said. “You’re a goalie, things are going to happen. Just have to move on to the next play and be aggressive.”

The Blue Knights didn’t let the penalty kick faze them.

After getting a pair of golden opportunities in front of the Lake-Lehman goal, which were both saved by Black Knights keeper Chris Ash, with just 16 minutes remaining in regulation, the Blue Knights made sure to capitalize next time. Less than five minutes later, Miller once again found the ball on his foot near the net.

Miller made his way through the Lake-Lehman defense, but just as he got his shot off he saw it blocked. But the ball found its way to freshman Luke Johns, who was able to put the ball just out of reach of Ash. The senior goalkeeper got his hands on the ball, but deflected it up into the top of the net to seal the 2-1 win in the 69th minute.

“We can come back from anything. We all show a lot of heart, and that gets us through,” Miller said. “We all knew as a team that we had to beat them and we all played with a lot of heart and we won.”
