KINGSTON – Five days after her team dropped out of the state playoffs in a heartbreaker, Samantha Mazula returned to the pitch to play one last time.

The Dallas senior rounded out her high school playing career with a hat trick and two assists to lead Navy to a 9-5 victory over Scarlet in the Wyoming Valley Conference Girls Soccer Coaches Senior Classic on Monday night.

“I’ve played with 99 percent of these girls since I was 10, when I started playing soccer,” Mazula said. “I was going to cry at the beginning because it is the last time I’m going to play under coach Nikki (Pekarski). It was a really awesome game, and we were all having fun.”

The stress-free game translated into an exciting and thrilling game of soccer that saw 10 goals scored in the first half. Both teams showcased fluid practicing in front of packed stands at Wyoming Seminary.

Mazula ignited Navy’s comeback effort from two goals down. Trailing by two, she tallied the team’s first goal in the 17th minute. Six minutes later, Coughlin’s Kendall Pearage cut a defender and drove 40 yards for a goal to even the score at 2-2.

From there, the teams went punch for punch for the next eight minutes. Wyoming Valley West’s Tiffany Michalek stole a ball off of the goalkeeper and dished it to Holy Redeemer’s Morgan Luksic for a Scarlet lead in the 26th minute.

Crestwood’s Sam Brumagin nailed a 30-yard shot to even the score for Navy in the 28th minute. Thirty-six seconds later, Mazula tallied her second goal for Navy’s first lead of the game. Just three minutes later, Michalek finished off a double-assisted play via Wyomng Area’s Erica Gallagher and Luksic off of a set piece.

“We were here to just play and have fun, but we were also here to win,” Mazula added. “We wanted to score a lot of goals.”

Crestwood speedster Taylor Tomalinas proved to be the difference maker and changed the momentum heading into intermission. Tomalinas sprinted 50 yards to outpace the defenders and give Navy a 5-4 lead in the 41st minute. She again outran the defense to score with 12 seconds remaining in the half.

Mazula secured her hat trick in the 83rd minute. She finished off her night by assisting Dallas teammate Nora Brown.

“I was super excited to play with (my Dallas teammates) again,” Mazula said. “I am really going to miss them. They’ve been my family for how many years.

“We wanted to get Nora a goal because she wanted one for so long.”

Lake-Lehman’s Mackenzie Love led the Scarlet team with two goals and an assist. Holy Redeemer’s Jocelyn Kosik and Meyers’ Victoria Collum made six saves apiece. Collum made a pair of saves on 1-on-1 chances in the second half.

Pearage finished with two goals and an assist for Navy.
