2017 Times Leader Boys Soccer All-Stars

FIRST TEAM

Ricky Wooditch

Sr., F, Dallas

Wooditch was a four-year starter and senior captain for the Mountaineers. The striker was the team’s leading scorer with 20 goals and 14 assists for 54 points. Wooditch was named a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 first-team all-star.

Tanner Nilon

Fr., F, Meyers

Nilon lead Meyers in scoring as a freshman. The forward tallied 32 goals and 17 assists by season’s end. Nilon was named to the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 first team. “As a freshman he was a vital part of our success this season and rarely left the field unless we were winning by a lot,” Meyers head coach Jack Nolan said.

Hubert Herrera

Jr., F, Crestwood

Herrera was one of three Wyoming Valley Conference athletes named all-state. Herrea was Crestwood’s leading scorer. The junior was named to the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 first team. “He is a fast, technically sound player and has a very powerful shot,” Crestwood head coach David McFarland said.

David Chopyak

Sr., M, Dallas

Chopyak was one of three Wyoming Valley Conference athletes named all-state and was named to the WVC Division 1 first team. The center midfielder was a four-year starter and a senior captain for Dallas. He finished the season with 11 goals and seven assists for 29 points.

David Cortez

Sr., M, Coughlin

Cortez was one of three Wyoming Valley Conference athletes named all-state and was a WVC Division 1 first-team all-star. The senior finished the 2017 campaign with 10 goals and seven assists for 27 points, according to stats reported to the Times Leader.

Edge Miller

Jr., M, Wyoming Seminary

Miller was the Blue Knight’s leader scorer. The junior was named a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 first-team all-star. “He had a great year and was a key part to a very successful year,” Wyoming Seminary head coach Rev. Charles Carrick.

Jake Gurtis

Sr., D/U, Wyoming Valley West

Gurtis finished the season with 12 goals and four assists and was named to the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 first team. “One of the best all around players in the league,” Wyoming Valley West head coach Charlie Whited said. “Can play all positions from forward to center-mid to stopper on defense.”

Dylan Gesford

Sr., D, Crestwood

Gesford was a captain and Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 first-team all-star in 2017. “Can play in all positions on the field. Mainly used this season as a center-back,” Crestwood head coach David McFarland said. “Dylan was our anchor in defense. Tall and strong, Dylan is also able to pass the ball very accurately. A true leader on and off the field.”

Blake Girton

Jr., D, Berwick

Girton scored 11 goals and had five assists for Berwick, with 11 goals and three assists coming in conference. The junior was a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 first-team all-star. “Blake was a standout defender for Berwick this season, and excelled with great defensive anticipation skills and headers,” Berwick head coach Kelly Calvert said. “Blake scored most of goals as a defensive back due to Berwick’s flex line attack style, which made for some exciting offensive build-ups.”

Kyle Mlodzienski

Jr., GK, Pittston Area

Mlodzienski’s 2017 turnaround was one of the best in the Wyoming Valley Conference. After allowing 114 goals and registering 80 saves in 14 games in 2016, the junior made 252 saves, while allowing just 38 regular-season and four post-season goals. Mlodzienski made 35 post season saves alone came from one match against Coughlin in the first round of playoffs, sending us into the second round against Abington for the first time in program history. Kyle also earned an All State nomination at our coaches meeting, although he wasn’t voted in by the other coaches, it’s another first in the program.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Jack Nolan

Meyers

Nolan led the Meyers boys soccer team, which included five Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 first-team all-stars — Johnny Torres, Tanner Nilon, Michael Krasnavage, Joel Vasquez and Mellt Molina — and four second-team all-stars — Sam Germain, Dodly Magliore, Anthony Macho and Tyler Schneikartto — to a handful of firsts this past fall.

In what could be Meyers’ last season in exsistence due to the uncertainty surrounding the school, the Mohawks won their first Wyoming Valley Conference divisional title in 10 years and made their first district final this decade.

Meyers fell to Scranton Prep, 3-1, in the District 2 Class 2A final, but still qualified for its first-ever state tournament appearance. The road ended for the Mohawks ended in overtime in the first round against District 11 champion Notre Dame-Green Pond. Meyers lost 2-1.
