Seven Wyoming Valley Conference swimmers learned they will have an opportunity to earn a state medal when the PIAA announced its at-large qualifiers Sunday for the state championships.
Two relay teams also qualified for the state meet. A combined 10 WVC swimmers and relay teams were selected alternates to the state meet. The fastest 16 individual and eight relay times from non-automatic qualifiers received tickets to the PIAA Swimming & Diving Championships held March 16-19 in the Kinney Natatorium at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.
They will join the 19 individual swimmers and divers, and eight relays that earned automatic qualifiers for the PIAA championships. The district/regional champion in Class 3A boys and girls and Class 2A boys secured automatic bids and the top two place-winners in District 2 Class 2A girls received a lane assignment for the state race.
Each of the at-large qualifiers hail from either Dallas, Holy Redeemer, Tunkhannock or Wyoming Seminary.
Despite taking just one boys and three girls gold trophies, Dallas won its second consecutive District 2 Class 2A boys and girls swimming championship. The Mountaineers will have its 200-medley relay team of Mikhail Krochta, Porter Luksic, Troy Reinert and Jared Krawetz at the state title races. Reinert received a berth in the 100 butterfly.
Holy Redeemer enjoyed the lion’s share of the at-large swimmers. Its 200 medley team of Connor Thole, Nick Dubinski, Adam Mahley and Adam Smith joined Dallas in the championship field. Thole returns to PIAAs in the 100 back and Dubinski will suit up for the 100 breaststroke. Kayla Kruk is making her first PIAA appearance in the girls’ 200 IM.
Two swimmers will be joining Wyoming Seminary in Lewisburg. Julia Baur and Paige Kupsky – both of whom already qualified in relay events – qualified in the 100 butterfly and 100 breast, respectively.
District 2’s 200 free champion Jacob Skoronski, of Tunkhannock, discovered he will also be swimming in the 500 free.
No Class 3A swimmers earned at-large berths. Hazleton Area’s Jorge Moncayo took the district’s lone alternate spot for the 100 butterfly.
The PIAA also released the preliminary psych sheets. Wyoming Seminary’s 400 free relay team of Julia Baur, Ava Baur, Paige Kupsky and Tara Kupsky have the fourth-best time of 3:37.43 among automatic qualifiers. Dallas’ Maddy Ross and Holy Redeemer’s Riley Williams have the sixth and seventh best scores, respectively, heading into the diving competition.
