KINGSTON — That rollicking, revved-up Wyoming Area went free-wheeling into new territory.

And it came out not only celebrating a statement victory, but a piece of history, too.

Bree Bednarski scored all three goals for the Warriors and Katie Wolfgang saved 15 shots Wednesday as upstart Wyoming Area dominated Wyoming Seminary 3-1 at Klassner Field.

It is believed to be the 13-year-old program’s first victory over the traditional District 2 power Blue Knights.

“I don’t think we’ve ever beaten them,” Bednarski said. “We were really excited, really pumped up coming here. It was a very important game to us. I just feel like we have a really strong team this year.

“We thought we could come in here and kick some butt.”

The Warriors kicked into high gear from the start, building a 2-0 lead within the game’s first 19 minutes that actually could have been much greater. One potential Wyoming Area scoring shot clanged off the post, another Warriors goal that was initially called good was then disallowed and a handful of other shots just missed the Sem cage.

“I don’t think this program has ever beaten Wyoming Seminary,” second-year Warriors coach Chris Comiskey said. “It’s only our 13th season. To my knowledge, I don’t think it’s happened before. It’s just an exciting game. I talked to the girls a lot about doing something that’s never been done.

“It’s easy to get fired up for that.”

Nobody on either side could remember the Warriors ever before beating Wyoming Seminary, but both teams are sure to remember this one.

The victory put 9-2 Wyoming Area in terrific position to earn the No. 3 seed and a home game in the District 2 Class 2A playoffs, right behind unbeaten Crestwood and Lake-Lehman. They were the only two teams to beat the Warriors during the regular season, and Wednesday’s victory gave the Warriors the tiebreaker advantage if their final record winds up even with Sem’s.

“It was a big win for them and it was a big loss for us,” Wyoming Seminary coach Karen Klassner said. “They just messed up a lot of things for playoffs. What it does to us, it takes some tiebreakers away.”

Not all hope, though.

While the Blue Knights slipped to 5-2 and a game behind 6-1 Lackawanna Trail in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 4, they’ll have a solid shot at a league title when the those two teams meet next Wednesday. And although both Sem and Trail appear headed for a battle of Nos. 4 and 5 teams in the opening round of the postseason, Sem still has time to recover and improve its seeding over the final two weeks of the regular season.

“If we beat Trail, we win the (Division 4) championship,” Klassner said. “We’re a young team. we’re going to make some mistakes. You’ve got to get through everyone, and Wyoming Area showed it was very good (Wednesday).”

Bednarski showed she may simply be unstoppable.

The league’s leading scorer with 42 points and top goal scorer with 36 took a centering pass from Emily Wanko and rang up the game’s first goal just over six minutes in, and the Warriors never lost the advantage.

“The shots were there, so I took them,” Bednarski said.

She took another and scored with 11:40 to play in the first half, and suddenly, the Warriors had Sem scrambling.

“When Bree scored that first goal, it just gave them a lot of energy,” Klassner said. “I think it’s just her drive and she’s very skilled. She’s athletic.”

Then came the reversed goal, which followed few near-misses for the Warriors including a laser that smacked the post and rolled harmlessly away.

“It was a big mental test for us,” Bednarski said. “We did get mentally strong during this game. That’ll help us throughout the season.”

Emily Sims tried to help Sem with a goal just 80 seconds before intermission, but that was all the Warriors allowed.

Wolfgang made save after save and received plenty of clearing help from Wyoming Area’s alert and quick defense.

“We couldn’t let them get excited,” Bednarski said. “We had to keep a cool head back there. And Katie Wolfgang is an amazing goalie. We’re happy to have her this year.”

Bednarski had her hat trick less than four minutes into the second half, taking Wanko’s league-leading 17th assist and ripping it high into the cage to set the final score. It proved Wyoming Area’s scoring machine can produce goals against anyone, including the league’s most respected programs.

“That was something we talked about last year. She would score against lesser teams, then we would play against better teams and she would not score,” Comiskey said of Bednarski. “She worked hard in the offseason.”

And it all has the Warriors entertaining high hopes for the upcoming postseason.

“They’re a great team,” Comiskey said of his Warriors. “They just have to start to believe how good they are.”
