YORK – Shane Angle experienced the PIAA Golf Championships at its best and worst over the last two days.

The Crestwood senior finished his only state golf tournament in 15th place, ending one stroke short of taking home a medal. Angle carded a combined two-day score of 8-over on a blustery day at Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center.

Angle was one of three Wyoming Valley Conference golfers participating in the state golf tournament. MMI Prep’s Jessica McClellan ended the Class 2A Tournament in 11th place, while Pittston Area’s Allie Craig finished 18th.

Angle started Tuesday in a tie for fourth place, and after birdieing his second hole of the day, the par-5 No. 2, moved within one shot of the lead. But after experiencing the good of the tournament, he soon saw the bad as conditions got tough and he bogeyed six of the next nine holes as his score dropped.

He rebounded with a birdie on the par-4 No. 13, but a double bogey followed on 14. Still, Angle concluded the event just one place shy of a medal as the top 10, including ties, received a state medal.

Liam Hart from Holy Ghost Prep shot plus-1 for the two days to win the state title by being one of just three golfers from any classification to shoot an even-par 71 or better in the second round.

McClellan was consistent both days shooting the same score (89) on both days. She closed out her junior year just 10 strokes away from claiming a medal with another year remaining.

Craig improved on her Day 1 score by three shots on Tuesday. The senior also hit a birdie on the par-3 fifth hole as she closed out her career.

The team portion of the state golf tournament is on Wednesday at Heritage Hills with Angle and the rest of the Comets participating against five other teams from around the state in Class 3A looking to become the first WVC Class 3A team to ever claim a state title in golf. The only team from the conference to claim a state title in golf was Holy Redeemer in Class 2A in 2013.

Teammates joining Angle are Jeremy Harper, C.J. Bono, Drew Barno and Mike Golden.
