Bloomsburg wrestler Andy Schutz had a red-letter day Nov. 20.

Schutz, a redshirt senior and a Wyoming Area grad, was named Eastern Wrestling League and PSAC Wrestler of the Week. It was the first time in his career that he earned either award.

Schutz earned the honors by going 4-0 at 133 pounds the week of Nov. 13-19. He posted a 4-0 decision in a tough 19-18 league loss to Indiana on Nov. 16 and then won three matches to earn the 133-pound title at the Black Knight Invitational on Nov. 19 in West Point, N.Y. The performance lifted his season record to 10-2.

Schutz would rather talk about the Huskies than his own accomplishments.

“There is a different feeling in the room this season,” he said. “All the guys are motivated and pushing each other hard. We’re just focusing on getting better and having fun competing.”

Redshirt senior Kevin Laubach Jr., a Berwick graduate, is also on the squad. He’s 2-3 overall and 2-1 in dual meets at 157 pounds. He also talks about the team.

“Our young team now has some college wrestling experience under its belt and I feel we have become closer than ever before,” he said. “I’m excited to see where the season takes us.”

Bloomsburg coach Marcus Gordon had this to say about his two veterans.

“Andy and Kevin both have been a pleasure to coach,” he said. “They lead by example every day in the classroom and in the wrestling room. It has been fun to watch them grow as wrestlers and as long as they continue to believe in themselves, they will do some big things this season.”

ALL-REGION FOR GREGA – Old Dominion senior Danielle Grega was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-South Region first team on Monday. The Wyoming Valley West grad had seven goals and six assists for 20 points with a game-winner for the 8-10 Monarchs.

St. Francis junior Brea Seabrook, a GAR grad, was named to the Mid-Atlantic Region second team. She had 10 goals and seven assists for 27 points with three game-winners for the 8-9 Red Flash.

SPENCER MAKING A SPLASH AGAIN – Senior Ben Spencer had a big season with Clarion men’s swim team as a junior and it appears that the Tunkhannock grad is out to better his performance this season. Spencer captured the 200 IM (1:58.22) and the 100 backstroke (53.65) in a 109.5-90.5 loss to Bloomsburg on Nov. 10 and won the 100 IM (53.98) in a 218-83 loss to Carnegie Mellon on Nov. 4. Last season, he set five school records and broke the PSAC record in the 200 back (1:49.08) at the league championships.

GOOD START FOR GIBBONS – Freshman Erin Gibbons is averaging 11.0 points and 4.6 rebounds and has 13 assists and four steals for the Mansfield women’s basketball team. The Wyoming Valley West grad has hit 20 of 38 shots from the field (.526) and is 11-for-23 on 3-points attempts (.478). Gibbons had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists in her first college game, a 71-66 victory over West Virginia State on Nov. 11. She had a college career-high 16 points in a 60-50 win over Pitt-Bradford on Nov. 15.

PORAY TOUGH ON THE MAT – Senior Billy Poray is in his fourth season starting for the Luther wrestling team. The Coughlin grad is 6-3 at 165 pounds this season with a major decision and, in a 27-14 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Nov. 21, he posted a 14-4 victory. Prior to that, he took the consolation title and was 3-1 at the Augsburg Invitational on Nov. 18 in St. Paul, Minn. Poray was 20-12 last season also at 165 pounds and has a 58-37 record with the Norse based out of Decorah, Iowa.

ZELLER FITTING RIGHT IN – Freshman McKenna Zeller is one of the top sprint racers on the Lycoming women’s swim team, which stands 2-3 in the early going. The Holy Redeemer grad has the Warriors’ top time in the 50 freestyle (26.34) and three backstroke events – the 50 (29.24) the 100 (1:01.10) and the 200 (2:15.76). Zeller recorded the latter two times in a 168-95 loss to Messiah on Nov. 18. She took the 100 back and finished second in the 200 back.

NARDONE PACING PACERS – Junior Mia Nardone is a key performer for the Marywood women’s swim team. The Pacers opened the season with three straight Landmark Conference setbacks, but got on the winning side with a 140-55 triumph over Cabrini on Nov. 12. The Pittston Area grad captured the 100 freestyle by more than nine seconds with a time of 58.42 and swam legs on the winning 400 medley relay (4:31.25) and the 200 free relay (1:45.80) in the Cabrini meet.

MOFFITT’S A VETERAN – Senior Joey Moffitt has been a solid performer in the breaststroke and individual medley for the Hartwick men’s swim team the past three seasons, but he’s really coming into his own this season. The Tunkhannock grad finished first in three events to help the Hawks turn back Bard 142-88 on Nov. 18 in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. Moffitt captured the 100 breast (1:03.94) and the 200 breast (2:20.33), and swam the breaststroke leg on the winning 200 medley relay (1:47.49).

MONTANA, CORRIDONI SOLID – The Bloomsburg women’s basketball team is off to a 2-4 start, but the Huskies are getting strong contributions from sophomores Taylor Montana and Meghan Corridoni. Montana, a Berwick grad, is averaging 8.5 points and 6.3 rebounds and had 16 points and seven rebounds in a 63-52 loss to Pitt-Johnstown on Nov. 18. Corridoni, a Holy Redeemer grad, is averaging 8.3 points and 4.5 rebounds and had 10 points and seven rebounds in a 63-54 triumph over Holy Family on Nov. 21. She had 13 points and eight rebounds in a season-opening 73-69 loss to Glenville State on Nov. 11.

ZANESKI CHIPPING IN – Freshman Stanley Zaneski was a key performer for the Ithaca men’s swim team in a 158-142 victory over Division II Le Moyne on Nov. 11 in Syracuse. Zaneski, from Edwardsville (Wyoming Seminary), captured the 50 freestyle (21.76) and swam the anchor leg on the winning 200 medley relay (1:38.56). He also finished second in the 100 freestyle (49.22) and swam a leg on the 400 free relay, which finished second (3:18.09).
