Hazleton Area raced to a 27-point lead after the first quarter on the way to defeating Whitehall 82-33 Wednesday night in a boys basketball non-conference game.

Jeff Planutis and Joey Grula scored 15 each for the Cougars, who led 30-3 entering the second quarter. Da’Mir Faison added 12.

Wallenpaupack 58, Coughlin 39

The Crusaders’ offense went cold in the third quarter, allowing Wallenpaupack to pull away for a victory.

Aaron Bennett led Coughlin with 18 points. No other Crusader scored more than four.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tunkhannock 51, MMI Prep 23

Tunkhannock had 12 players figure in the scoring in its victory.

MMI’s Irene Altmiller was the only player in doubles figures on either team. She scored 11.

Hazleton Area 49, Pittston Area 18

Anthony Thomas (126), Shane Noonan (220) and Michael Fuchick (285) recorded pins for Hazleton Area.

C.J. Demark (145) and Nick Ridgley (152) had falls for Pittston Area.

Tunkhannock 54, Wyoming Valley West 26

David Evans (113), David Gavek (126), Gavin D’Amato (138), Tommy Traver (145) and Logan Hegedty (285) posted pins for Tunkhannock, which also won four matchups via forfeit.

J.J. White (120), Landon Stanislaw (152) and Jaylon Brunson (160) won by falls for Valley West.

Wyoming Area 54, Valley View 23

Alex Pierce (160), Jaryn Polit-Moran (170), Corey Mruk (182) and Justin Joseph (195) won by pins for Wyoming Area.

Dallas 96, Coughlin 56

Emma Thomas (200 free, 500 free) and Melissa Leonard (50 free, 100 fly) were double winners for Dallas.

Abby Sutzko (200 IM), Annalise Cheshire (100 free) and Gianna Leo (diving) also won individual events for the Mountaineers.

Raven Bozek (100 back) and Rosie McGrane (100 breast) won events for Coughlin.

Dallas 77, Coughlin 23

Mikail Krochta won the 200 and 100 freestyle races for Dallas. Dennis Dukinas (200 IM), Tony Caravaggio (50 free), Shane Szczecinski (100 fly) and Kevin Allen (500 free) were also winners.

Coughlin picked up wins from Eric Balchum (100 back) and Kevin Clarke (100 breast).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Misericordia 59, Mary Washington 56

Misericordia rallied for a win over Mary Washington at the Cruzin Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Rachel Carmody had a team-high 10 points and nine rebounds and Paige Wampole added nine points as the Cougars won their fourth straight game to improve to 5-4.
