20 from WVC named all-state by publication

The Pennsylvania Football News selected 20 Wyoming Valley Conference players to its 2009 all-state football teams.

The list is headed by a pair of first-team selections – Dallas senior tight end Cody Plesnar to the Class 3A team and Hanover Area senior defensive back Mike Balas to the Class 2A squad.

PFN honored more than 700 players with selections.

In Class 4A, Wyoming Valley West senior A.J. McGovern was selected as a third-team offensive lineman and senior teammate Kyle Wallace was chosen a third-team defensive lineman.

Class 4A honorable mention selections were: Williamsport senior running back Drae Lewis; Williamsport senior offensive lineman Matt Lewis; Hazleton Area senior receiver/quarterback Chad Nichols; Hazleton Area senior defensive lineman Joe Semanchik; and Hazleton Area senior offensive lineman Matt Starrick.

Two of Plesnar’s teammates were also honored in Class 3A. Sophomore Paul Brace was chosen as a third-team offensive athlete and junior quarterback Adam Goeringer was among the honorable mention.

Berwick senior offensive lineman Nate Hess was picked for the second-team offense, while Coughlin senior lineman Eli Tohme was chosen for the third-team offense.

Three GAR players were chosen to the Class 2A second team: junior defensive lineman Dane Dudick; senior offensive lineman Joe Oldziejewski; and sophomore defensive back Shaliek Powell.

GAR senior Rich Ivanov was chosen as a third-team linebacker. Hanover Area senior Tomas Cabrera was selected as a third-team offensive athlete.

GAR senior offensive lineman Mark Glowinski and GAR junior running back Kurtis Thomas were honorable mention selections.

According to PFN’s Web site, the selections were based partially on head coach nominations, personal observations and input from scouting services, site contributors and the media. Individual statistics on MaxPreps.com were also used as a guide.

All selections can be found at www.pafootballnews.com.
