High School Football Playoffs

November 8, 2009

Meyers gets surprise home date for game

Mother Nature has given Meyers a District 2 Class A football home game despite being a lower seed.

The third-seeded Mohawks (4-6) will host second-seeded Northwest (7-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium. Meyers coach and athletic director Mike Namey said Northwest asked the game be moved because of conditions at the Rangers’ grass field.

“They made the request to me whether we would make it a home game,” Namey said. “We said sure.”

Wilkes-Barre Memorial has an artificial surface. Namey said Meyers will have to absorb the game costs such as security.

The other D2-A game remains as expected as Riverside (3-7) will travel to rival Old Forge (10-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.

In D2-3A, second-seeded Dallas (9-1) will host third-seeded North Pocono. Top-seeded Abington Heights (9-1) will host fourth-seeded Berwick (7-3). Both games are 1 p.m. Saturday.

In D2-2A, fourth-seeded Mid Valley (7-3) is at top-seeded Dunmore (10-0) and third-seeded Lakeland (7-3) is at second-seeded GAR (8-2). Both games are 7 p.m. Friday.

Williamsport (7-3) will travel to Hazleton Area (7-3) for a 7 p.m. game Friday in the District 2/4-11 Class 4A tournament. Wallenpaupack (7-3) will travel to D11’s Parkland (8-2), also slated for 7 p.m. Friday.
