Mounts’ Goeringer, Hawks’ Cabrera head WVC all-stars

Dallas’ Adam Goeringer and Hanover Area’s Tomas Cabrera were selected as MVPs on the Wyoming Valley Football Coaches Association’s all-star teams.

Goeringer, a junior quarterback/linebacker, was chosen as the MVP of the Big Schools, which encompass Class 4A and 3A teams in the Wyoming Valley Conference.

Cabrera, a senior receiver/defensive back, was selected as the MVP of the Small Schools, which included Class 2A and A teams.

The Times Leader will select an All-WVC team at a later date.

Goeringer helped Dallas to a 10-2 record, the WVC Division 3A championship and a berth in the District 2 Class 3A championship game. The Mountaineers won two games in 2008.

Goeringer finished the regular season by completing 68-of-125 passes for 1,154 yards and 14 touchdowns with only six interceptions. He also rushed for 608 yards and a team-high 11 touchdowns.

Cabrera caught 27 passes for three touchdowns and rushed for 302 and two TDs during the regular season. He also returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, helping Hanover Area advance to the finals of the Eastern Conference Class 2A tournament.

As a defensive back, Cabrera led the Hawks with 118 tackles, intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles. He also handled the punting duties.

GAR’s Tony Khalife was named the Small School’s coach of the year. The Big Schools didn’t select a coach of the year.
