Royals reign in volleyball

PLYMOUTH – Tournament MVP Brian May and all-tournament selection Zach Redding paced Holy Redeemer to the volleyball championship Saturday in the 13th annual Spartan Classic at Wyoming Valley West High School.

Redeemer defeated Valley West 25-18, 25-23 in the championship match. The Royals topped Berwick in the semifinals 25-9 and Western Wayne 25-16 in the quarterfinals.

Valley West defeated Mountain View 25-12 and Berwick defeated Crestwood 28-26 in the other quarterfinal matches. Twelve teams participated.

Also named to the all-tournament team were: Demetrius McCray, Easton; Sean Sheridan, Western Wayne; and Andrew Connell, Alex Czoek and Dylan Thomas, Valley West.

Tricia Gunderson scored on a breakaway in the first half and assisted Isabella Jaffin with an 18-yard score in the second as Berwick remained undefeated in Division A.

Abington fell to 1-2 in the division.
