MOOSIC — Music was blasting and champagne, beer, ice and Gatorade were flying through the air.

Al Pedrique, Jake Cave, Nick Rumbelow and Cito Culver couldn’t even get through their interviews without getting showered by something.

For the second time in three days, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders were celebrating in their clubhouse after another win. This time, it resulted in an International League North Division title.

The RailRiders (84-50) opened their four-game series against the second-place Rochester Red Wings with a 5-3 win. Rochester (77-58) now will settle for a battle for the wild card against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

“No matter what (path) my career takes or what everybody’s career goes for, these are the things we’re always going to remember for the rest of our lives,” Cave said. “I could win a World Series, and when I’m old, people will ask me about baseball and I’ll say, ‘Well, when I was in Triple-A I got to pop bottles with the team.’ Right now this is like seven times I’ve done it in Scranton, with the Scranton team, and we’re still looking to do it again. It’s awesome. It’s the funnest time.”

After a quiet game offensively on Sunday — a 7-2 loss to Syracuse — the RailRiders weren’t going to waste any time clinching their third straight division title, and ninth in the last 12 seasons.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored five runs in the first four innings to take a commanding 5-0 lead, one the RailRiders wouldn’t relinquish with Bryan Mitchell on the mound.

Mitchell cruised through the first four innings, before letting the first two aboard on a single by Leonardo Reginatto and an Anthony Recker walk to start the fifth. Reginatto scored on a one-out Engelb Vielma double, which also moved Recker to third. J.B. Shuck laced a sacrifice fly to right field to score Recker, but Mitchell forced Rochester’s No. 2 hitter Niko Goodrum into a ground out to end the inning, limiting the damage to 5-2.

“I felt pretty comfortable all night,” Mitchell said. “Unfortunately, I gave up a couple runs there by the end, but that’s going to happen. I was confident throughout. We came out early. I knew we wanted to win tonight. It’s fun.”

As the lead continued to shrink, with RailRiders reliever J.P. Feyereisen allowing a run on a Vielma seventh-inning sacrifice fly, Nick Rumbelow came in to pitch a 2.1-inning save.

He forced Shuck to ground out to short to end the seventh, threw a perfect eighth inning — including two strikeouts — and after Matt Hague lead off the ninth with an infield single, he pitched Reginatto into a force out and Recker into a game-ending double play.

“It all started with Mitch’s tempo coming out, and then J.P. coming in and giving us 1.2 innings,” Rumbelow said. “It’s a big situation (in the ninth) for sure. I want to get quick outs there. I was looking to get a double play. Definitely, when somebody got on, get another out and then get a double play. Get some ground balls.”

The RailRiders victory was a good glimpse into what they’ve been able to do all season.

Two long-standing RailRiders, Mason Williams and Cito Culver, each homered during the offensive barrage to start the game, and Cave, who was a June callup from Double-A Trenton and has been Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s best player in the second half of the season, got the offense going with a first-inning, one-out solo shot.

“We worked really hard for this,” Culver said. “The moving pieces here. Everybody, like new guys coming up from Trenton, guys coming back down from the big leagues. Everyone has stayed focused and helped this team win. It’s just awesome. It’s awesome.”

For tonight the RailRiders can celebrate, before they turn their attention to preparations for the Governor’s Cup playoffs, which will start on the road on Sept. 6.
