MOOSIC — The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had already clinched a playoff berth and the International League North Division title before they even took the field against the Rochester Red Wings Tuesday night.

But they didn’t look like a team that had nothing but pride to play for on Tuesday.

The RailRiders (85-50) opened up for eight runs in the first five innings, and Rochester (77-59) couldn’t recover. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre beat the Red Wings for a second straight night, this time 8-1.

“When I came in early this afternoon, even though we had a late show-and-go today, a few of the guys came in. I started feeling the energy and the loudness in the clubhouse and I thought, ‘Oh, they got some sleep,’ ” RailRiders manager Al Pedrique said. “That was good that we came out in the right way, and that’s one thing I mentioned to the position players, that we needed to finish strong into the playoffs.

“I’m glad we came out aggressively, swung the bat well, got good pitches to hit, came through in key situations and also got good pitching.”

RailRiders third baseman Miguel Andujar led the way offensively.

The 22-year-old tripled and then homered, scoring twice and tallying a pair of RBI. Andujar, who extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games on Tuesday, was 2 for 4.

“When (I go) up there to the plate, (I go) up there with a plan, and (I) was able to execute them a couple times,” Andujar said through a translator.

Billy McKinney and Wilkin Castillo also had big nights at the plate.

McKinney was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI while Castillo’s fourth-inning three-run home run put the game out of reach. Castillo’s shot to left provided the RailRiders a devastating 7-1 lead and the catcher finished 2 for 4 with a home run, run scored and three RBI.

“That’s what we need. We need to make sure all those guys get locked in before the playoffs start,” Pedrique said. “Anytime you can get that kind of help from Castillo hitting ninth, it takes the pressure off from some of the guys from the middle of the order.”

Making a spot start in place of the recently recalled Jordan Montgomery, Nestor Cortes provided the RailRiders with 5.2 innings of one-run baseball.

The left-hander often got into trouble, letting the lead-off batter on base three times, but time and time again escaped without any serious damage. Cortes was able to spread out seven hits and a walk while striking out five.

“I felt great,” Cortes said. “Defense was great behind me. My catcher called a great game — I was going with what he was calling — and the bats came alive. Everything worked out and I’m very happy to get the W.”

Holliday joins RailRiders

Matt Holliday joined the RailRiders after a seven-game rehab stint with High-A Tampa. The New York Yankees designated hitter caught fire over his last five games with Tampa, sporting a .400 batting average with a double and four RBI.

The 37-year-old played nine innings as the RailRiders’ designated hitter. Holliday said before Tuesday’s game that he plans to rejoin the Yankees on Sept. 1 if all goes well with the RailRiders.

He was 1 for 4 with a run in Tuesday’s win.

“I feel good. Obviously, a couple more games before the first to get rolling and hopefully I can go up there and make a contribution,” Holliday said. “It’s been difficult (two months). Frustrating at times, but you just deal with it day-by-day and try to keep moving forward. I do what I can, just trying to get back to 100 percent so I can hopefully help the team.”

Higgy throws

RailRiders catcher Kyle Higashioka threw for the first time since he was placed on the disabled list earlier this month on Tuesday. A timetable for his return hasn’t been decided yet.

Higashioka was placed on the seven-day DL on Aug. 19 with a shoulder strain.

“It feels 100 percent now, so it’s just about building back up to game speed,” Higashioka said.
