MOOSIC — There’s something about the Rochester Red Wings.

Chance Adams season as a whole has been very impressive. The right-hander has been the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders ace ever since he was called up in May.

However, when Adams faces the Red Wings, he always seems to struggle. Including Thursday night.

Adams gave up five runs in 5.2 innings and the RailRiders couldn’t recover, falling 5-1 to the Red Wings, who avoided a four-game sweep at PNC Field.

“Once he gave up the lead he started elevating all of his pitches. He didn’t command and work from behind the count,” RailRiders manager Al Pedrique said. “He gave up a couple hard singles and they ended up scoring those two runs (in the fourth) and it seemed like that killed the momentum.”

Thursday proved to be Adams’ worst start in his first year of Triple-A.

He was cruising through the first three innings, facing just one over the minimum, but a three-run fourth rocked the touted prospect.

The 22-year-old’s five runs given up were on seven hits and three walks, and he allowed the first two batters on in each of the fourth, fifth and six innings. Adams did strike out seven.

“It’s one of those starts that he got away with some mistakes early,” RailRiders catcher Eddy Rodriguez said. “The funny thing is, a lot of guys end up pitching three or four innings and allowing five. The fact that he went as deep as he did is an accomplishment on its own. Chalk it up, it’s a bad start. He was all over the place. It’s literally what happened.”

Thursday was on par for much of Adams’ outings against Rochester, who has been his kryptonite this season. He’s given up 13 runs on 18 hits and nine walks in 24 innings, while striking out 23.

Adams has a 4.88 ERA against the Red Wings this season and a 2.01 ERA against all other opponents.

“With a team against Rochester, you have to keep the ball down, you have to be able to move the ball around the plate,” Pedrique said. “They’re smart hitters, they have older guys in the lineup and that’s why you have to execute pitches in key situations. I don’t know what the deal is, but against Rochester he hasn’t done it. He’s going to have to learn to figure it out and make those adjustments as the game goes on.”

Miguel Andujar’s first-inning RBI double was the lone RailRiders highlight of the evening.

New York Yankees designated hitter Matt Holliday, who played in his third rehab game with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, worked a two-out walk and on the very next pitch, Andujar drove a ball to deep right. Holliday scored on a the play, but Andujar was thrown out going to third to end the inning.

Pedrique said after the game that Holliday is heading back to New York.

“That’s one thing he worked on earlier to day during batting practice — trying to hit the ball the other way hard,” Pedrique said. “I thought he drove the ball well. He got that double off the right field wall and then the long fly ball between center and right that the center fielder made a nice play.”

Castillo to the DL

RailRiders catcher Wilkin Castillo was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a knee injury on Thursday.

While the MRI results hadn’t yet came back as of before the RailRiders’ game, Pedrique said that Castillo wouldn’t be “ready for a few days.”

“He brings a lot to the table,” Pedrique said. “The clubhouse is great. He keeps everybody loose. He loves to have fun. On the field, he’s done a good job behind the plate handling the pitching staff calling the game, blocking, throwing.”

The Yankees traded for Columbus Clippers catcher Erik Kratz on Thursday. The veteran catcher was placed on the RailRiders’ roster and has yet to report.
